People can't possibly know this because Jesus did not have a sexual relationship with anyone. Not only that, but because in the Old Testament law homosexuality was a sin, and Jesus came to fulfill the law, and was without sin.
They are basing this on a phrase in the bible that is taken out of its historical and cultural context - something about John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, leaning his head on Jesus' chest. The "love" here was not describing a sexual love of any kind.
Some people also say that because some people are totally ignorant.

"The goal of the gay-rights movement is twofold: To convert the culture's thinking on homosexuality, then to marginalize or silence those who won't be converted.
So far, the movement has converted the thinking of our most influential institutions. The American Psychiatric Association, the academic establishment, the media and Hollywood have all largely adopted a pro-gay viewpoint.
But the last major obstacle to the full acceptance of homosexuality is the Church, which is largely influenced by the Bible. So if the Christian population can be persuaded that the Bible doesn't condemn homosexuality, or that the Bible is irrelevant, then that would virtually ensure a pro-homosexual culture." - Joe Dallas, author of The Gay Gospel? How Pro-Gay Advocates Misread the Bible

It makes a difference because Christians absolutely hate homosexuals. That would meant that their savior was gay, and they can't have that, can they.
Oh, and those that keep claiming he was gay are either ignorant or just trying to get a rise out of people, because no one alive now was alive back then so no one really knows for sure.

Well, he did hang around a bunch of guys....... It makes no difference to me and I can't figure out why some people get offended by suggesting it.People who get offended by something like that are basically saying that they are so sensitive about what they believe in that they can't stand up to scrutiny or ridicule. It is the classic victim syndrome. They treat everything that questions what they believe as an attack and then use the "I am a victim" to attack others.

It's just a very immature way of stirring things up. Jesus had no need for sex as His needs were spiritually above man's needs.

They are ignorant of the customs of those times.
Greeting with a kiss, expressing agape love for a brother, reclining at meals with friends so close that they touch. etc. Common customs then - strange now.
