Gandalf? He died and came back... hehe
Maybe Christians are hobbits. Humble, family-types.
I think Catholics would be Ents, because they are ancient and traditional. Elves would be angels or some eastern religion, I think. (Muslims would be orcs. jk jk)

The dwarfs in the earth, | as Durin said.
11. Nyi and Nithi, | Northri and Suthri,
Austri and Vestri, | Althjof, Dvalin,
Nar and Nain, | Niping, Dain,

The Istari, agents of the Valar moving in the worlds of mortal men, sharing knowledge but not seeking dominion, enlightened but fallible, living in great hope and light, yet corruptible.
And to the west we have returned.
and if you haven't read the Silmarillion you probably wont have a clue what I'm talking about.
Olorin would smile and blow smoke rings.

humm while i really think that christianity is better represented by the overwhelming numbers of sauron and his dark army(sauron being the pope of course) and saruman and the orc and uruk leaders being the different sects of christianity. the ring of power would represent truth, and whoever holds it has absolute power of truth. the underdogs, elves, dwarves, men of gondor, men of rohhirim, the hobbits, and i suppose the ents are the factions of religion and non-religion fighting off the supressive control of the dark lord. so that is quite a little allegory isn't it?
