A 5 percent glucose solution is frequently administered to the blood of persons who have undergone surgery. Why? What affect does this have to the person or to their blood?

naturally when a peson undergoes surgery that might be because he/she has an underlying problem or an illness. And if that person is diabetic it has been known that an increase of blood glucose levels are needed during times of illness/diseases to prevent hypoglycemia

it also replaces blood volume i believe just like .9% saline solution does.
