A few old rifles were just passed down to me and I'm trying to find out what make, model, etc this one gun is. It has "9724" engraved on it in multiple places, "Mod 98" is engraved on the side, as well as what looks like the Nazi Germany Insignia. My first thought was that it's a Mauser Model 98 or similar, but I'm definitely no gun expert so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have pics on my Flickr: http://flickr.com/photos/12494879@N07/sets/72157602233910251/

Yes, that's a Model 98 Mauser. Looks like a decent sporterization job was done on it many years ago.

I'm no expert, but I did play around some with those old rifles when I was younger. I think you are correct, that one, from the pictures is a sporterized version of what you called "Mauser", I know if you look up the stampings on the action, you'll come up with where it was made and everything. Also, I think there were after market parts for hopping them up and so forth. Some times people would swap out parts on them for other parts in better shape, so the numbers and insignia will not be the same as with the years of manufacture and origin. I think that one was called a Mannlicher style that had a long barrel, that stock isn't original either, as you probably already know. It's value is relative to your likeing of it, some models are kind of rare though.

I've used Mouser actions for several guns. It is still one of the better actions. And yes, the action is a Mod 98 Mouser. It will be worth your while to find out who did the custom work on the gun. Documentation can often double the value of a rifle like that.
