the original role of the god mother was for that person to be a spiritual role model for the child and also raise the child in case of the death of the parents. in this day and age they really serve no purpose. it's mostly just a way of telling someone that they are important to them and their family.

Loving & caring for the child. I am a proud godmother to a 22 month old and soon to be newborn. I wasn't for sure what godmothers do so I asked my friend what she wanted me to do as a godmother and she told me that my responsibilites was to take care of the children if something should happen to them. She also informed me that her family members know her wishes to where her children should go if something tragic happens.
If you are unsure, ask what is expected of you.

Be a friend and mentor to the child, raise the child if the parents are unable to.
My sister is the godmother of my children. They have special weekends where they do fun stuff with her and tell on me for all the evil mommy things I put them through. Then she reports back to me when they aren't listening what they said. lol

It reall depends upon your religious befiefs.
Catholics are different for Orthodox christians and Lutherns do it different than Methodist.
You are responsible for getting a gold or silver cross w/necklace. The Christening outfit W/shoes. and responsible for telling them about christ. The old rule of thumb would be that you would be responsible for that child if something was to happen to the parents. That how ever was thrown out long ago!

When I was growing up, my parents told me that it would be the godparents' responsibility to look after the godchild if something ever happened to the parents. Yesterday I was at a Baptism and the priest said it's the godparents responsibility to help teach the religion to the godchild if something happened to the parents.
