Paint ceilings first with ceiling paint, if grandmas ceiling is full of grease or smoke, prime first even if you cleaned well it will bleed through if your using same color as walls (hope not) then it doesn't matter.

The only difference in paint is Interior and Exterior. As long as you are painting with Interior Paint on your ceiling and walls you are Golden! The way in which you paint the ceiling is different as well but only to the point of needing to wear a hat to keep paint from splattering on your hair. You can buy a roller with a shield on it to help with the potential for splatter problems. As far as primer I always prime walls and ceilings. Its a good habit to get into as it will save you time down the line and if you have stains to cover up or crayon like my kids love to dish out around here I suggest getting Kilz Primer. Its the best stuff just make double sure its Interior and not exterior.

Yep, gravity is the rule to keep in mind ... just like with cleaning! Start with the highest surface and work down!

If you're using fairly light, neutral colors, you can paint the ceilings and walls the same color ... eliminates taping and/or cutting in ... and no worries about trying to be neat where the ceilings meet the walls ... can save you a lot of time! Good Luck on your project!

I paint the ceiling first ! Then the paint if a different color don't drip on the walls. And it depends on how you are finishing the trim also! Paint, wood, pipping! It all has to be considered. Good Luck!

It doesn't matter as long as you keep a bit of paint ready to touch up if painting ceiling different color than the walls.

My Dad was a contractor, involved in many remodeling jobs, and it drove him nuts when customers would redo their walls and floor and then expect him to fix the ceiling without doing anything to the walls or floor. I guess my parents' mantra growing up (besides - "go to the bathroom before you go to bed" and "big girls don't bite") was "only idiots start at the bottom on a remodeling job!"
