If I want to know if I'm a great fisherman or not I'll ask my wife.
Lord knows she rates everything else I do, and has charts, graphs and statistics to back it up. Why not this too?

Consider that 90% of the fish are caught by 10% of the fishermen.
How well do you do compared to those you fish with or those you meet fishing?
Check out your local bass fishing tournaments. If you have bass in your area I'm sure they have tournaments.
They range in cost from $25 up to thousands depending on the tournament. But your local area should have a few local clubs that cost around $25.
Some of those have purse money into the hundreds and pay anywhere from 5 to 30 or more places.
Tournaments are fun and a lot of cameraderie.
Your local bait shops should be able to tell you where to sign up.
I live in CA and we probably have 8-10 local clubs. Plus we cater to the international tournaments.

When you go out with your buddy who says he is a great bass fisherman, and you beat his A-- so bad he is really sad for days, you gave him the same lure, and told him how to present it and still he couldn't catch one to help you win the tournament (I got 11th place by myself)
Then You KNOW your a really good bass fisherman!
by the way he is standing right here right now reading this so I am just reminding him, sorry if it sounds to braggy.

Joanne that was a nice answer! Well done!

You know your a good fisherman when you really don't care what other fishermen think.

Fishing is 70% LUCK! Excellent gear and a nice boat count for 12% , Boating SKILLS count for 10 %,

8-10% is skill, knowledge, and "sixth sense".

You can't really be "great" at something that 60-70% of the time is a crap-shoot! (lol)

(But your sayin' in your head: What about those Bass tourney pro's who win time and time again? They beat your 70% Odds scenario!
ANSWER: It's amazing what sponser's GIVE to those pro's! I'll bet I could be a pro if someone gave me 5 days to pre-fish, a TOP of the line Sonar/GPS, a TOP of the line BOAT with a 250 HP motor, MONEY (YES MONEY!) to "pay-off" local fishermen & bait/tackle store-owners for INFO/TIPS on HOT SPOTS, FREE HOTEL, FREE GAS, FREE RODS & REELS, FREE HANDMADE "PROTO-TYPE" LURES, Etc, Etc, Etc.) Did you know that Roland Martin use to pay for info/tips? Did you know that Hank Parker became famous because he developed an amazing "spinnerbait" ,(with help from sponser's), that won tournaments? ETC ETC, ETC, ETC, ETC.

However, there is one factor that does "level" the playing field in "pro" Bass fishing.
"Casting".
If you can't hit a frogs @ss at 25 yards with a spinnerbait/lure 7 out of 10 times ,QUIETLY, tourney-fishing may not be your "game".

But, if your just out to catch some fish and you do it well, invite me over & i'll let you see one heckava fishEATER! (lol)

(Sorry about the Pro-fishing "rambling"! I got carried away! Just go fishin' and enjoy it while you can! A great fisherman in , say, Thailand is one who brings a fishy home for dinner!)

I dont know but here are my observations about fishing:
1. you are never too drunk to fish
2. there is a fine line between standing on the bank fishing and standing on the bank looking stupid
3. every bass fisher i have ever seen always does this:
they get in a boat, travel to the center of the lake and cast their line toward the shore.
4. I think any fishing license distributor should issue a nice size fish along with your license just in case you have a lousy season. This way at least you get something for your money
5. Never offer to take a mother in law on any fishing outing unless you are sure you can make it look like a boating accident

A good bass fisherman beats his friends consistantly to where they dont want to fish with him anymore.

A great bass fisherman is when you can catch fish year round, win tournaments, still whip your friends, and can teach others how to succeed in this great sport!

To me it's like Joanne said
A good fisherman can go out and pretty much catch fish every time.
But a great fisherman can go out and teach other that he's never even met before and teach their kids too. He can even let others use his gear and not fish himself at all that day, because he knows he can do it all another day and another and another, and he just enjoys using his skills to show others how to enjoy fishing now that's a GREAT FISHERMAN!!

A GOOD FISHERMAN:

You know when you pull up to the dock and the old salts gather 'round.

Usually they just look, nod, walk away with their hands in their pockets.

When they shuffle around the dock longer than usual and mutter things like, "Damn, that's a nice fish," and, "Now, THAT'S draggin' the bait around," you've earned bragging rights.

A GREAT FISHERMAN:

Says nothing. (S)He lets the old salts do the bragging for him/her.

Whenever you completely wear out 5 cameras taking pictures of nothing but quality fish you have helped others to catch.....then you know. I am still working with my 3rd camera so I have a way to go.

If you can bring home the bacon, then you're a good fisherman.
