When you are 17 you need your parents or guardians to sign a release to allow you to enlist. Once you raise your right hand and swear in, you are officially separated from you family and am an adult. No you cannot drink, no you cannot vote, but for all other practical reasons you are now on your own. Once you turn 18 you can vote. Once you turn 21 you can drink.
The Coast Guard is a great service. I have had many friends in the CG. The job is extremely challenging. Translated from the Latin, their motto is "You have to out, you don't have to come in". The mission of the CG is life saving, drug interdiction, stopping illegal immigration and anything else their Commander says it is.
I wish you well my friend.
Have a great life.

Once you join, you are going to be considered an adult and responsible for yourself (which will happen soon enough because you will have turned 18 or will shortly after).
Dad will have to sign to let you join because you are not 18. Technically he can change his mind...but the bureacracy will be a bithc if you have already joined and shipped out. Changes a bit when you have not shipped out yet as he can withdraw his parental consent. Talk to the CG recruiter for better specifics.

Once you have their signed permission the military does not let them change their mind. He may be able to do it before you get to basic training but once there, you are there. He can still do other things a parent can do, like finances, but you are the military's to work with.

NO, once you make that decision as does the parent that is final. But until you reach 18 you are not emancipated from your parents in other areas.

I hope you are joining becasue that is what you really want to do, and not just ot get out of the house.
If it is not what you really want, give yourself a year or two and make up your mind.
Nothing agianst the military, but it requires a high level of commitment, and it is not for everyone.

once you join you're in, and no it won't release you from parental custody but he can't force you out if he changes his mind later.

Yep, you'll probably be permanently out of your parent's clutches after you enlist. Unless you're discharged before you turn 18 and go back to live with them, but that's unlikely.

Once you take an oath to Uncle Sam you then belong to him
and he doesn't do joint custody.
And Popeye above doesn't have a clue.

You have to get both of your parents to sign you over. Once they sign you over you belong to Uncle Sam. There isn't anything they can do about it.
