This entire issue is a grey area...

While the ACT of downloading the file is NOT illegal - the file itself MIGHT be.

For example - If you are downloading a full version of Microsoft Office, then it IS illegal because that is retail software (that you are NOT paying for). However, publically available programs (such as the latest version of Open Office - probably the most popular "free" version of Office) are perfectly LEGAL to download.

MP3's are even harder to tell - MOST of them ARE illegal copies, but there is NO way to tell (at least not FROM Limewire) which files are rips, and which have been released into the PUBLIC DOMAIN (such as "internet pre-release" versions of songs).

yeah it is illegal to download music through limewire(even with the paid version)then why use limewire u ask me-i dont know..i dont have any other uses for it.buying the paid version will give u better connectivity speed and some other features.but will not make downloading music legal.try the itunes store or something like that..thats legal. and about the virus thing...if u r looking for a song then it will usually be between 2 to 6 or 7 MB maximum i.e.2000 KB to 7000 KB.if u see any results showing 154 kb or 143 kb or stuff like that.DO NOT DOWNLOAD..THEY ARE VIRUSES.mail me if u need anymore info.

No, Limewire is perfectly legal. However, what you download can be illegal. Anything that is copyrighted or an Intellectual Property of someone else and is being distributed without their consent is illegal. However, I'm pretty sure that normal downloaders will not be sued only the people that put the copyrighted stuff up are the ones taking most of the risk.

There is nothing illegal about having LimeWire on your computer. It is perfectly legal. But downloading copyrighted music, software and programs is NOT legal.

LimeWire is NOT illegal.

The illegal part is downloading and uploading copyrighted files if you don't own the copyright or have the copyright owners permission.

Downloading copyrighted material without the copyright owners permission or monetary reimbursement is illegal.

It's called piracy.

It depends what you are downloading, if something has some sort of copywright or legal protection, downloading it online is in sense "copying" it and yes it is illegal.

Odds are if you 're downloading tv shows, or music of anysort (most of the time music download is mainstream) it is illegal

I hope that helped.

Downloading copyrighted songs and material is perfectly legal. However, sharing copyrighted material is what will raise the authorities.
