I approached a Navy WWII Veteran and said "thank you for serving our country". but it sounded like I'm thanking him for currently serving our country.. What's the correct way to thank a veteran?

It sounds like you did very well.
Most of the guys that served then as now, have a sense of duty and responsibility to this country. So the real thanks comes from knowing that they did their part at protecting what other have given them.
But it is still nice to hear, and for me nice to thank those that served before me.
20 year Navy retired.

I've been thanked many times in exactly the same manner that you thanked the Navy WW II veteran. The company I work for sends me a thank you e-card every veterans day, since I'm a partially disabled, Vietnam era veteran which is a category included on most employment applications. Apparently, the company I work for keeps track of it.

Make sure all veterans, rich poor, black white, smart dumb, get supported by their country when they return.

In a country as supposedly wealthy as we are, and as supposedly patriotic, there is nothing more embarrassing than a homeless and jobless veteran.

Yeah, some may choose it... but be honest, it's hard to get out of poverty in the new order. Talented educated folks are working in the service sector, and CEO's that never served get lewd salaries and bonuses even when they bankrupt entire corporations.

You support the vets? Act like it.

I've been thanked like that. Expecially when I'm wearing my "Navy Retired" ball cap. And each time I truly appreciate it. The only regret I might have is my never hearing it before September 11, 2001. But, better late than never.

That was good enough. In a way he still is serving the country.

Support veteran's benefits. Oppose war profiteers. Support local veterans' organizations like American Legion, VFW, DAV, go to their events and fund raisers.

Some really good answers here. As they said, thank you is enough. I know, for me, I don't know how to reply when someone thanks me for serving, Im at a loss, but it is nice to hear.

To the guy who brought politics into it, I say, wrong place and time my friend. Keep those thoughts to yourself at times like that.

Don't worry -- the way you said it was just fine. I am a veteran myself, and would be more than happy with the way you said it.

Just say thank you . It's easy.

Now and then pick up their check for their coffee or lunch. It wont break the bank. I do it all the time.

Especially for the young ones. They don't get much pay.
