How about option c - stay directly out of it but call for backup (i.e. 911)? That way you both don't end up dead.

No matter WHAT, I WOULD DO SOMETHING (Call the Police, make a Commotion/Yell for the person to stop!
As for getting physically involved w. them (if the situation counldn't wait for the cops:)
It depends on the following:
1) Was my elderly dad with me (cn't put him in harms way)?
2) Can the person have a gun?
3) Are they alone?
4) Are they soemone i may have trouble with if they live near where i do?
5) Is the victim really the victim (could be the other way around,...u never know for sure who started it/why!)?

As others have said, it depends on the situation. I've watched a "gang fight" (of about 8 people) out my window before when I loved in NYC - no WAY would I get involved in that! (Others did call 911, however.)
I can't imagine seeing someone in distress and not doing ANYTHING, however. If I did not think that me physically rushing in would help (I'm not particularly tall or intimidating!) I would certainly be calling 911 or possibly throwing something/yelling/whatever would help the situation. Trying to get others' attention at the LEAST. Although, hey, short or not, if the element of surprise is on your side, you always have a shot. Maybe a well-aimed tackle is all it would take. :)

No way would I help. If that person did not want to be mugged they should not have been there in the first place. People need to take responsibility for their own life choices. Why should I be responsible for running around bailing them out all the time. Maybe you and your liberal buddies want to save the world but you can do it with your own resources and not mine. Those types of people get what they deserve.

You are obligated to help. People often do not get involved not for fear of getting hurt themselves, but because they are not completely sure that the person is actually in trouble and they don't want to look stupid by overreacting. I made this mistake once and read a very terrible headline later that week. You don't want to feel like that. You are morally obligated to intervene whenever you think someone needs you or else you will pay with the pain of your conscience.

Stay out of it but call 911 and try to stay around without being noticed. I only weight 100 pounds, there's not much that I can do.

your question is too vague. It all depends on who is being assaulted, and many other things.I mean you don't want to help one person, and then that person start beating the other person to a pulp. I guess you mean if i knew the person truly needed help, like maybe if it was a woman or child, then yes i certainly would help.

I would stop to help. But then I'm a big guy and can fend for myself. If you're fearful for your safety, stand a good distance back so the assailants can't reach you and yell as loudly as you can: HELP, I'm calling the Police...

If I saw someone in trouble, I would risk my life for the stranger. That's my first reaction. I'm not the selfish type of person.
