The DREAM Act (S. 774)is an amnesty that extends to the millions of illegal aliens who entered the United States before the age of 16. The illegal alien who applies for this amnesty is immediately rewarded with "conditional" lawful per*manent resident (green card) status, which can be converted to a non-conditional green card in short order.

To qualify, the immigrant student or armed service member would have to meet certain requirements such as:

* Proof of having arrived in the United States at age 15 or younger;
* Proof of residence in the United States for a least five (5) consecutive years since their date of arrival.
* Having graduated from an American High School, or obtained a GED.
* "Good moral character," essentially defined as the absence of a significant criminal record (or any drug charges whatsoever).

Immigrants who meet the above requirements would be eligible to apply for a temporary six (6) year "conditional" residence permit.

Will the Act pass ???

The bill will not pass as a whole. What will happen is small parts of the bill will be passed with some larger ones like a war spending bill which will be approved.

Certain aspects of it sound alright, but for the most part, it's crap.

Don't count the Dream Act as a done deal.Old Harry Reid is really desperate when he attached it to a military funding bill .There are many reasons for it not to pass and the first being the mood of many Americans. The DOJ suing AZ did not set well with a very large majority of people. With the midterm elections coming Nov 2 most liberals/Democrats are just trying to not get their butts kicked out of office..Its been two years now that Obama has been in office and you haven't seen amnesty yet so dont count on it. There is no such thing as an undocumented American. That's cute but not accurate at any level. Illegal aliens are simply that illegal. The so called immigration reform will suffer at the hands of the Dream Act promoters. My bet is if the Dream Act gets out of committee it will be after the midterm elections. If it ever makes it out.It has not the last 2 times it was tried. It failed.

I'll tell you, I think it won't pass before the election because I think the Democrats don't WANT to pass it, they want to keep it as an election issue. Otherwise they would take out those 'waivers' they put in that go way beyond the supposed scope of the bill to let family stay here 'for humanitarian reasons' (a much weaker standard than the current 'extreme hardship to a citizen' standard) or for 'family unity' (thereby bootstrapping in the parents who came illegally in a bill advertised as only letting legalize 'those who had no choice') Both of those waivers could be use to overcome lack of good moral character or a criminal record, as well.

Without those waivers, and with a more 'student realistic' age cut off like 25 years old, it might have passed already.

So why don't they propose that if that is all they are really trying to do?

Because they want to preserve it as an election issue.

I only give that opinion about a 60% likelihood, but it is the way my thoughts are tending.

I don't think so, Reid can run his mouth all he wants but the people are adamantly opposed to it. Even democrats are complaining to their elected officials that they do not want to grant an amnesty.

The government has been to lax on this issue for far too long so it will not get support until the situation improves.

Ask this question again AFTER the US borders are secure and a large number of criminals are deported permanently. You might get a different answer then.

Any bill that includes amnesty for illegals has no chance to pass. The American people are against it in large numbers.

None it is political suicide. It has very little support and every politician knows if they vote yes for it come election time they will have no explanation for why they voted to have us the American taxpayers foot the college costs for illegal immigrants.

It has been stopped, but they aren't giving up. The intention is to slip those bits and pieces in (as in the amnesty reform bill), so we'll have to watch them like a hawk!

Slim to none. Less than a 5% chance at best and I'm glad it won't. I'm wondering...how many times will we be celebrating it's defeat before Reid gets a clue.

i figure over 95% of U.S. citizens oppose any amnesty so they are taking their chances with their political career if they do pass it. my calculation is based on the number of antis out of the total number of calls (it's actually 95.6%) made to a senators office. that politicians that were on the fence are now opposed to the bill. the number of antis on yahoo answers.

The DREAM Act is so bad that they are now trying to attach it as an amendment to an unrelated defense bill. If it had any merit it would stand on its own.

The chances it will pass are slim, very slim.
