They said the tooth was cracked. But they just ground down the tooth and put a temp crown on until the permanent crown is ready. I still have some pain in the tooth. Should'nt they have done a root canal?

Yes, I think you should have had a root canal. If you're still having pain in the tooth, make it a point to call your dentist and let them know that something is wrong before they go ahead and put that permanent crown in place.

This is good dentistry and you are lucky you don't need a root canal done. Dentists always try and save as much of your natural tooth structure as possible and you are a perfect example of that.

As one of your other answerer's mentioned, they are crowning your tooth as your natural crown has degraded to the point where the whole tooth can break apart ...and then you would likely need a root canal or the complete extraction of the tooth. This crown will strengthen your existing tooth and prevent further decay or deterioration.
Your temporary crown is very inferior to the metal porcelain crown you will get in the end. That is why it may be sensitive to cold or hot. If the pain seems more to the inside of your tooth, then the soft pulp tissue of your tooth may have been damaged during the grinding and preparation for your crown and if the pain continues and grows ...let your dentist know.

Don't you worry. I got my first crown April '07, and didn't need a root canal. My tooth was about as rotted out as one can get, but somehow it was saved. I guess my dentist is just good, I hope. You could always ask your dentist if you don't feel right about it. Although you only need one when your tooth is 100% dead or infected. Good luck!

I've had many crowns put on without a root canal. It's quite normal. Only if the root is abscessed , Then you'll need a root canal

They only need to do a root canal if the tooth is dead or if you have a bad infection and the tooth can not be saved, and they need to remove the nerve. They are going to put on a crown because your tooth is not strong enough now with the crack, so if you dont have a crown it will break.

Mine never hurt that long. I've had three done; one has been awaiting its crown for over a year. I had one done and the tooth next to it started hurting. He just opened it up and cleaned it out real good, and that (along with a few days of antibiotics) stopped the hurting for a couple of months. I'd try another dentist. The one you have isn't effectively stopping your pain and that's what you need right now.

I have had crowns with out root canals before. I would ask the dentist about it if you are not comfortable with his decision.
