i just got my hamster yesterday and it is a very nice male teddy bear hamster. the cage i got for it had like a tube thing and there was a "bedroom" for the hamster at the top of the tube. today, after i came home from school, i lifted up the top of the "bedroom" cos i wanted to play with my hamster. (it was awake) when i was holding it, the hamster kept trying to jump off my hand. i put it back into the cage. 10 minutes later, i went to check on it and i tried to put it in the "bedroom" cos that was his fav. place. he didn't seem to like anymore. i think he doesn't feel safe in his "bedroom" anymore. then i tried holding it again and it bit me on my finger. i dropped him back in the cage. 30 minutes later, i checked on him again and he was sleeping in a corner of the cage. i feel bad because after i lifted him out of his bedroom, it's like he's afraid to go there again. when can i do to make him not be afraid? thanks!

yesterday, when i got him, he would let me hold him and he would even play around in my hand. and i know that the "bedroom" section of his cage has his fav. place because he spent all day yesterday playing around in that spot. and also, he already moved treats up there so i don't need to.

also, he won't eat any fruit and veggies. i tried feeding him a small piece of apple and he didn't want it. at the store, he is fed these "pellet" things. and yesterday we bought a bag with a combination of "pellets", dried meat, sunflower seeds and peanuts at the pet store. he moves everything except the "pellets" to his "bedroom". also, i think the "pellets" are healthier then the sunflower seeds. i am not adding anymore "treats" until he finishes the "pellets" cos he only had pellets at the pet store. also, how can i get him to eat apples and other fruit and veggies that hamsters can eat. and yes, i know what they can eat and what they cant eat.

After keeping for more than 30 hamsters, i realised one thing that hold true until this day: Dont ever ever wake up a sleepy hamster - They are cruchy and moody hamsters if you do that.

Actually there's a way to wake up hamsters not by hold them up immediately but rather gently stroke them to awake..

Another alternative is to talk to them softy before opening the cage - this give them the mental preparation that their owner are going to pick them up to play.

What I guess to you is actually place a piece of towel over the cage (to darken the cage) to calm your hamster down first (around 4 hours) so that it will go back to it's usual hangout place.

Next - try talking to it using soft voices and let it get used to your voice. You can place clean hands and let you explore your hands. (Dont pick him up for a week or so but you can consider stroking it softly and gently from the front.) Slowly, you can lure it to come to eat at your hands with treats/food on it.

As for food, since you are new owner, I would suggest you not to put any extra treats or food. Start off by putting min. quantity instead (around 10g of food) and see how fast he finish up the food. Add/lessen the food to find out its daily intake so you can have a rough guide on how much to feed it daily.

As for fruit and vegatable, it is okay to replace commerical food ie pellets but remember to throw them away at the start of the day (cuz rotting food isn't good for your hamster) before you go to school.

All owners, including me, had a tendiency to give extra food and treats to their pets and we should be guilty of this (=.=lll that's how my hamsters become obese).

PS: Love and patience is a way to fight your hamster's fear and aniexty as well as win your hamster's trust and confidence.

^^ Happy Hamstering ^^

I'm sorry to hear that you think your hamster may be afraid of his "bedroom" section of his home. I'd suggest that you just let him do his thing, maybe it wasn't the section he wanted to sleep in afterall. But, if you do think he's afraid of it, perhaps putting some treats or a few toys or something in that section of the cage.

By the way, I'm not sure if you already know this or not, but hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and are active during the night time.

If you just bearly got him you shouldn't be holding him. You're supposed to let the hamster adjust to the habitat change for a few days. If you don't do that, you can stress the hamster out, and he can get sick and maybe even die. Hamsters are very unpredictable. Even if they are hand-trained they can still bite if they are startled. I suggest you leave the hamster alone for a few days before you attempt to hold him again.

I agree with Abe. I would suggest doing research on hamsters on the internet so you know what to look for if your hamster is sick, and also feeding suggestions. Im not sure what they were feeding the hamster prior to you getting him, but my hamster gets hamster food, and a raisin on occasion.

Also, a really good treat (I know this sounds gross) but they love to have crickets on occasion.

You just got him yesterday....?
Didn't the people that work at the store tell you to leave him alone for a few days so he can get used to his surroundings?
He's nervous because he hasn't gotten used to his new home yet.
Just wait a few more days and try playing with him again.

i think of Twinkle is a very attractive call, and "tinkle" is the bathing room euphemism, no longer Twinkle! have exciting which incorporate your hamster, and ensure to do your study to grant it the perfect care achievable.
