To buy opium or get typhoid fever. No other reason to go to that cesspool.

I've been to China countless times since 1984. I love the country, the food, the people, the sights, the colours, etc. I met wonderful friends there and had interactions with mostly friendly people, but I also met some real as#$@, like anywhere else. I also can't stand many things happening there: human rights violations, environmental degradation, the growing gap between the haves and the havenots, the lack of spiritual values that were once fundamental to the Chinese culture and how money has become the new God, and whatnot. But I am also able to criticize my own country as well, I am not complacent about it. We should all acknowledge that our societies are far from being perfect, and work towards improving our lot, wherever we are from, instead of bickering about who's better and who's worst...

China's history is very old compared to USA. If you want to view history, do not miss this part of Asia. Imagine Great Wall - it is different to be there than just seeing it from big screen or post card. I went to China this year with my aunt. We visited Beijing and Shanghai. I am proud of China and I am proud being a Chinese. There are many things to see and appreciate the natural wonder and God's glory

**I 'll tell you why **
The reason why anyone wouldn't want to take a trip to China is because they don't know anything about the rich Chinese culture and history or they are comparing China to some Western countries, raises questions like *how they couldn't find any burgers or fries in China...so they hated that country*.
Just like, don't goto Egypt and complain why sands are flying everywhere in the desert you got a sore eye, and some people ride camels, the pyramids..same thing don't come to China and complain about China with your simpleton mindset.
Notice the answers that some people write here: "the air pollution, the crowded streets, the many cars..." bla bla bla...These ppl are a disgrace, who knows nothing about the world or appreciates the many different cultures that exists in humanity except their own.
Yet, you never hear them telling you something like " I visited this ancient tombstone or landmark it is where this historical event that took place milleniums ago happened right there, or I 've travelled up to the peak of this mountain and I saw this weird natural phenomenon i've never seen anywhere else before.... "
And how could you not mention the food in China? 3000 years accumulated knowledge of culinary experience. I still haven't tried out everything there is there. If you think general tso's chicken or the lemon chicken Chinese food you've tried in america are good(those are not even Chinese food since chinese have never heard of them before)... wait till you try the real Chinese food in China.
===========================================
They only use their own tourist mindset to judge China, yet they've never tried experiencing China through the eyes of a Chinese, that .... is a pity.

I hear a lot abut China here and I can tell you because I live in China. My wife is Chinese born and bred, I met her in Brisbane and then we moved to China. She and I both wish we had never come here! People say the food is healthy and on the surface it would seem that way but if you go into the kitchens and see the way it is prepared you would think differently. Not just the hygiene aspect but everything is swimming in MSG and cheap cooking oil. The people in the cities are mostly racist and very unfriendly they look down upon my wife because she is Chinese and married a foreigner (Wai guo ren). They spit everywhere (even in MickyDs' and KFC: the women too) and throw rubbish on the street. Every day I see people coming out of restaurants and vomiting on the street. I could go on forever and I know many people will think I am exaggerating, but I am just telling you my experience. Believe me or not. 'Sophomore' seems to be suffering from the Pollyanna Syndrome. Many of my Chinese friends from Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai who now live in Australia said my wife and I must be crazy to go and live in China as they would never return. They have a collective experience of over 150 years in China how long have you been here????

I am seeing many Chinese people in USA and they have come from different parts of their country and settled here comfortably. I want to go to China and see how other people are there and I read an article about China about the comparison of the rich and the poor in their country. There is a very big gap between poor and rich in that country. Riches are always rich there and poorer are poorer there. Let me see how they live in their country. Yours BRAVURA

I came to China for a variety of reasons and beliefs, all of which have turned out to be completely FALSE.
We in the West are not told the truth about China. Both western and Chinese writers hide the truth from us. They tell us that the Chinese people are kind, friendly, happy, helpfull, respectfull etc. When in fact the truth is that they are NOT.
You will see on this and other websites Chinese people telling you LIES about their country. They do this because they are ASHAMED to tell the truth. They believe that any criticism of China or its people is a personal criticism of them. It is NOT !
It is a fact that some Chinese cities are amongst the WORST polluted cities on the planet but they will NOT admit this. Even the International Olympic Committee has expressed concern to the Govt. here about it.
You will see Chinese people here on Y.A. defending China at all costs, they will say " it happens / happened in the west so it's ok if it happens here " They will try to blame NON CHINESE for the problems that exist here in their own land. THEY WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEMSELVES! Thats the Chinese way." ALWAYS blame somebody else for your problems " is their unwritten motto.
They believe that their history and culture is the oldest ( and best ) in the world. Of course it is not, but they will not accept the truth even when it is proven to them, and accuse anyone that says that of being anti China or a " China basher " They have been so cut off from the real world for so long that they simply will NEVER accept ANY TRUTH that they believe is " anti China "
The Chinese people themselves have destroyed most of their historical buildings and sights ( During the cultural revolution ). The Chinese people themselves are responsible for the deaths of far more Chinese people than ALL the " foriegn invaders " put together, but you try telling them that. Ask how many Chinese people were killed during the " Reign " ( because that what it was ) of Mao and why do they revere a MASS MURDERER like a god and believe that he is the " Father of the nation "?
When we , as foriegners, point out these thing they simply insult us by using terms such as " Simpleton " and "disgrace" they will not believe that many non Chinese know far more about China than they do as they simply have very little access to the truth here. Many still do NOT KNOW that CHINESE soldiers KILLED innocent Chinese people in Tiananmen square. They have been taught that Tibet WAS NEVER an independant country. They have been taught that every aspect of China and the Chinese people is BETTER than any other country or people in the world, ask them WHY and HOW? THEY KNOW NO BETTER ! I feel sorry for them as I do for all uneducated and ignorant people. They deserve our pity. No more.
As for their food, well, of course they KNOW it's better than any foriegn food, despite the fact that the majority of them have never actually eaten non Chinese food, but that is how arrogant many of them are.( If you enjoy your food swimming in oil then you will LOVE the food here)! Then they accuse other people who have been to far more countries and have far more experience of the world, than they ever will have of being ignorant themselves ! That is the typicall Chinese attitude.
I came to China to try to help young people, I came to see the sights and get to know " Real " Chinese people. My experience has been one of racial and physical abuse. I have been lied to constantly, cheated, stolen from, and treated with contempt and disrespect. Many other people that come here are treated the same. They leave, as I will, disillusioned and disgusted with this country and its people.
The people here simply do not know how to behave in a civilised country. Thats why their Govt. is running advertisements on the TV telling/asking/training them to be " nice " to each other. ( The olympics are coming and they don't want the rest of the world to see the reality of the people here )
How has it changed my view of the rest of the world ? The rest of the world is BETTER ! Thats why 70% of Chinese students who go to study abroad NEVER return! Because they see that their adopted country is MUCH MUCH BETTER!!

China was a fabulous place to visit. The people are really wonderful. It is different from what you study in school and what you see on TV. If you watch American TV you would tend to think that everyone was kind of uptight for lack of a better word...the people of China were in fact very gracious, very kind and couldn't wait to show us their country. There is a lot of clutural pride and its really nice to see. No one there bashed Americans or other countries. It was really a nice trip.
As for changing my opinion, I think that maybe Communism works there. There are so many people that I'm not sure a democracy could function well in China. Just my thoughts.

China has many outlying provinces that are still living in traditional culture. Plus the scenery in various provinces are very diverse. I will want to travel there to see its natural beauty in the many provinces there.
