Whatever you do DON'T HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO DOESN'T INCLUDE THE NEGATIVES AND/OR THE HIGH RESOLUTION PROOFS! Friend or otherwise....

Around here average for an established professional is goin to be about 1500 for a day of shooting and all your originals.

For a quality amature probably about 500 but you have to do your homework.

The best thing to do is ask your friend. Every photographer is different. My uncle went insane and had 3 photographers at my wedding (NEVER do that, by the way, unless they are part of the same photography group). Two of the photographers were fairly cheap($500 for 2 hours each), but only gave me CDs of the photos and it was up to me to go someplace and make prints. The other was more expensive($1,600 for the whole wedding and a proof book) and had some packages and then options to order sheets of photos that were reasonable but it took awhile to get these from her.
Really it depends on the city you live in, who you know, and the individual photographer.

That's a difficult question because wedding photography costs can range depending on MANY factors:

1) What city you're located in (i.e. a photographer in New York is going to be more expensive than one in bumkinville USA)

2) How long you want them to stay at the wedding

3) What is included in the package (i.e. your wedding album)

4) The reputation of the photographer. If the photographer's work is great quality and he or she is in high demand, then the prices will obviously be more expensive.

All I can say is that our wedding photographer cost around $2000 but that was in Knoxville, TN. and included our wedding album, unlimited shots for an engagement session outdoors with 3 different outfits, a bridal portrait, and unlimited time on the day of the wedding. He also ended up coming to our rehearsal & rehearsal dinner for free. He was AWESOME.

Wedding photography prices vary widely, depending on what is offered, the experience level, and the part of the country you live in. My advice, look at portfolios from photogs in your area. Most have websites now. Many have price ranges posted. Narrow it down, then meet in person. Some offer hi-res files in the pricing, some have on-line proofing and ordering and include a print credit. In the past, hardly any photographer offered the negatives as part of a package, at least not for a few years. That business model is changing. Expect to pay more for a package that offers hi-res files, as the photog won't be counting on print sales for income.

In the end, go with a photographer you feel comfortable with, within your budget with a good portfolio. Best wishes!

I am photographer. Step one. I do not do friends and family weddings. Pick some one that is not in the family. Just trust me. Probs came arise. Go with digital packages. You can make your own wedding album. Just go with the CD. And make sure that the photographer make all of the corrects.. and make sure that the prints are in full resolution. It might cost you from 700 to 1000. But if you go with the friend, still go digital. Maybe he will charge you $500.. If you need a photog. I am open. kenyonperryman@sbcglobal.net

In nor CA where I am you can get a mediocer photogrpaher for around $500 - $1000, Decent bu nothing special $1000 - $2000, awesome work that looks like art $2000 and above.

Make sure you have the rights to all your images and that they are provided to you on a disk (or you keep negatives if using film) ask what the cost includes, do you get proofs all images, are they touched up, how much are additional images...do they charge for travel? What is the cost for additional time the day of the wedding?

I would suggest going on a site like theknot.com or weddingchannel.com & search photographers in your area. You can get a good idea of what people are charging for various packages & what kind of quality the work is.
Speaking for my area, anything under $1000 just looks cheap to me, like something I could photograph myself. From $1000-$2000 you get very good quality pictures with good packages. Over $3000 you're getting excellent quality with everything basically included in the package.

The photographer I just interviewed for my wedding charges $1650 for unlimited time (which is really great), he will shoot 1000-2000 pictures & then narrow them down to 200-400 of the best ones, which he can digitally "fix" if needed. These all go on a CD for me to keep & do whatever i wish with. He will also upload them to his website for friends/family to view & order. Extra costs: We can order a photo album through him for $300 or create or own for $800-$1000 (which we will save up for & do about a year after our wedding).
I would just look at several photog's websites in your area & see what they are charging.
Basically though, you get what you pay for!

Honestly you get what you pay for with photographers. A professional is giving you more than just his time on the wedding day - they're editing your images, designing your album, and directing your photosession to run smoothly and on schedule. A friend however how well meaning just won't be able to do this out of the gate. Check out our video for more on why you should invest in a professional photographer:

Depends on what city you are in and what you want for your money. Just paid for 2 weddings. One was $1000, included 5 hours of shooting, 200 photos on-line and 1 CD of all photos. 2nd wedding, $2500, included 7 hours, 200 photos on-line, CD, a Storybook, and 10 prints.
You can also do a quick web search of local photographers, they should list prices.

the smallest package i saw was for around 300 but it hardly included anything. they can b expensive id say they average about 600-700. a friend of mine posted on a local universities website. she found an amazing ameture photographer. and college students work fairly cheap. the 20 yr old girl did better than some professionals (whove worked int he field longer than shes been alive) have done.
