I was wondering about this.
The 1911 is a very old pistol design, it's been around for a very long time. It is tried and has proven itself and the design has changed very little over time. Aside from a few adjustments here and there, it's the same as it was so long ago.
Why is it that on average, 1911 pistols are quite a bit more expensive than other popular pistols? A 1911 from Kimber, Springfield Armory, S&W, SIG, Colt, etc. etc. are almost always over $1000 new.
You can get a brand new Beretta 92/96, Ruger P89, Smith and Wesson metal frame like 4006, CZ75, Glock, and quite a few other models for pretty much 1/2 the price of many of the popular 1911 company models.
What is it that makes the 1911 so much more expensive to produce than so many of these others?

The price of a 1911-style gun can be as low as $350 or as expensive as $2,000+. The average is probably $600 right now. Why so high? Well, for one thing they have more steel in them than just about any other auto popular today (Highpowers have a lot too, and have you seen what browning wants for those?) . The simplicity of the design means high durability and demanding manufacturing specs and this means you pay more. Aluminum frames (Beretta, Ruger) are easy to do and tolerances are far easier to achieve. The CZ-75B (all steel) is cheaper than most 1911 guns (save the RIA/Charles Daly 1911 series) because the frame is cast and the gun uses split pins, has no firing pin retaining plate, and Czech labor is cheap. And by the way, a basic Kimber ( I own one) can cost as low as $599. I got mine for $639 back in 2006. The bottom line is that the 1911 still has more parts made "the old fashioned way" than almost any other auto handgun. If you want stuff done the old way, you pay more. Although sometimes mainspring housings and triggers are plastic and small controls are MIM (high-tech casting process). Oh eah-one more thing. Have you seen the prices for non-polymer S&W autos recently? Far from cheap.

It isn't that it is more expensive to produce, it is that everyone and the uncle wants one. I have called many gun shops and sporting goods stores in my area in the past. One place had one undesirable one in stock, 3 were out and say they get one every six months and it is gone within a week, a fifth place has a waiting list half a dozen names long. They just can't keep thme on the shelves.
Watch this section, see how many people are asking about buying 1911's compared to those asking about buying other handguns....it is amazing how many people want 1911's.

Model 1911 handguns are more easily customized and there are many many after market parts companies making bells and whistles for them. Naturally everyone wants those fancy doo dads so the price goes up on the original pistol. Keep to a basic stock 1911 45acp pistol and you can find some good bargains.

Demand [popularity] . A brand new Colt Government model .45 auto sold in 1970 for $ 117.00, in the early 1980's it sold for $325, the few Colt .45 autos made by Colt sells for $900+. It is insane. The cheapest 1911 sytle 45 auto you can get is about $600, and that would be in a brand X.

I cannot tell you why the others are so high, but Taurus makes their PT1911 and they have a number of extras that come standard on their pistol that you would have to pay more for on the kimbers, SA, etc. Taurus' model is around 650 or so...Take a look on:

My buddy owns one. I am not much of a 1911 fan but that is the one I would go with.
The current issue of American Handgunner has an article on it.

As long as it is a true 1911 the parts interchange. People have been customizing the 1911 for over 50 years, so yes it is most likely to be the most customizable. I do have to agree that the Taurus is a great value.

Brand name recognition & popularity.* Owning a piece of History.* Quality, Durability, Serviceability, Dependability.* Its not what you pay for something that matters, its what you get for what you pay.* I personally like the Colt Combat Commander in 45 acp.* Well balanced & comfortable to carry, easy to conceal, and it doesn't cost $1000.00 dollars.*

Supply and demand dictate prices on all commodities. The supply is there and the demand is high, so, high prices.
I have a Remington-Rand 1911A1 US Army made in 1943, and someone auctioned one off and it brought $1200.
Why? Some one wanted it very badly.
