Birds for certain. They fling their food around, they leave feathers all over, and they'll poo on you (or right on the floor) if they're out of their cage.

Cats are meticulous groomers, however. They keep themselves very clean. While they do step through a litterbox, I've noticed most are careful to avoid stepping in anything. ;-)

So birds are dirtier for sure.

Birds

A bird makes a mess throwing seed around, but the cleanup is relatively simple (unless the li'l critter escapes)
A cats litter pan smells and the feces larger to deal with.
If the cat urinates in the house the smell lasts for a long time and is difficult to clean. Also they shed.
I guess the trade off is affection.
A male cat will often develop the habit of spraying -personally I think a spayed female cat makes a pretty good pet.
A bird is good company--I have enjoyed both cats and birds as pets.

It depends. If you expect to let the bird out of the cage often, which seems the humane thing to do, then birds are dirtier. They poop all over everything. Cats just shed and for the most part go in their litter box. However, if you have a cat that pees elsewhere (often indicative of a urinary infection which is more common in males) then there's quite a lot of potential for damage to clothes and furniture--as cat urine is very potent. If it does happen, make sure to use Nature's Miracle to thorougly clean it up. Follow the instructions on the bottle.

In terms of personal hygiene, both animals are quite thorough cleaners, although birds often need powders etc. for complete baths.

After cats get used to their litter boxes, they are no problem at all. I have 2 cats and they waste outside but if you plan on getting an indoor cat all you will have to do is change the litter once a week and make sure there is food and water in his bowls. You can also get the food and water things with the bottles on top and so you barely ever have to refill it.
Birds are somewhat messy and pretty smelly in my opinion. My bird died after I had it for a year, and I was constantly reaching in to clean out the poop and the bottom of the cage. I would also have friends over sometimes and he would be so loud. They can also be exeptionally loud at night.
Birds are incredibly messier and harder to take care of. : )

A bird is dirtier because they live outside and plus, cats takes baths birds don't.

I think birds because birds use the bathroom way to much!!! And you have to end up cleaning it. But a cat, you can just train it to go outside or to use a litterbox. Plus when you feed birds they get bird seeds everywhere. So if were you.. if you considered getting one of these animals i suggest you get a cat.

cats leave hair everywhere, but if you don't keep a bird in a cage, then the bird is dirtier. so, if the bird is in a cage, the cat is dirtier...but if not, then the bird.

Both are 'dirty' in very different ways. Birds 'do their business' which is very wet, and if they are 'let out' they 'go' wherever they are and it 'drops' on things below them. Cats 'do their thing' in a litter box or outside, but it's bigger and carries more germs. They both leave 'food' in their bowls, and frequently on the 'floor' (of the cage, or outside the cage, if it's a bird) ... so I'd say they're 'equally dirty' in 'human terms.' You can 'cuddle' a cat, but you can't 'cuddle a bird' ... but you can't take a cat everywhere on your shoulder, and you can if you train your bird properly. Why don't you get a 'stuffed animal' instead ... they are VERY CLEAN and sit on your bed and 'wait' for you when you are gone.
