My church used to be open 24 hours, but after a spate of incidents in which church goods were stolen, walls defaced, stained glass windows broken, a combination of syringes, used condoms, and empty bottles littered on the floors, and money robbed, the church had no choice but to close its doors at times when people aren't there to monitor it. There is one small room of the church that's open 24 hours for prayer, but there's always somebody there to watch over things. The remainder of the church is closed after hours.

excellent question. I know several years ago many used to be open 24/7 for anyone to go there and pray; and some still may be, but because of much of vandalism in many neighborhoods, alot cannot do so anymore.

what is more interesting is try calling a church, get a random number of them out of the phone book, guarantee you, almost always you can never reach and talk to a pastor on the first call attempt, even though they don't work, imagine if someone were suicidal or something? whew.

Most churches are just another business, not much different than the local florist, beauty shop or pizzaria, at least they answer the phone and can give you information.

God is open 24 / 7 but God does not live in buildings.

He lives in the lives of those who believe and trust in Him.

Churches which are open 24 / 7 have a weird view of God that thinks God lives in a building.

I went to a wedding rehersal in a church building full of statues and the groom thought it was ok to tell a dirty joke outside but not inside the church.

Why?

Did he really think God could not hear the dirty joke told outside the four walls of church building?

At one time almost all churches where open 24 hours. With the growing numbers of people who purely hate God (Jesus ) such are the many on Yahoo Answers. These people that hate God ( Jesus ) done everything they could to destroy churches, so to protect the church peoples stuff, the churches had to be locked.

(2 Chronicles 2:6) 6 And who could retain power to build him a house? For the heavens and the heaven of the heavens cannot contain him, and who am I that I should build him a house except for making sacrificial smoke before him?

"Churches" aren't 'houses of God'. The building is simply a place to worship and learn.

Where can I hide from your spirit?
From your presence, where can I flee?
If I ascend to the heavens, you are there;
if I lie down in Sheol, you are there too.
If I fly with the wings of dawn
and alight beyond the sea,
Even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand hold me fast.
(Psalm 139:7-10)

Most Monotheists including Jews, Christians, and Muslims believe that God is omnipresent (everywhere).

God can be found:
+ In every human being who was made in His image
+ In every believer as part of the Body of Christ
+ In my heart, mind, and soul
+ In His creation, the universe, nature, animals, plants, and the back yard
+ In His revealed Word, the Holy Scriptures
+ In the Sacraments of the Church
+ Anywhere and everywhere

" The " church is the house of God. This Church is not one made of the hands of men but its a spiritual habitation and dwelling place of God in the hearts and spirits of men and women.

Ephesians 2:22
" IN whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in spirit"

Ephesians 3:17
That Christ may make His home in your hearts through faith, you being rooted and grounded in Love"

These buildings are nothing but brick and stone and mortar. The real church are those who love God and men. You cannot talk to a building..but you can talk to God and to those who bear His life within them.

No one is perfect but we can be those giving something of this Lord to others. If there is a need, the Christ in the believers desires to minister to that need according to His riches in Glory.

Jesus Christ is rich to those who call upon His name.

Check this verse out in 1 Corinthians 1:2
' To the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, the called saints, with all those who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in EVERY PLACE who is THEIRS and OURS:)

And that bumper sticker also asks why churches have lightning rods if they trust in god. So confusing.

Because people do not respect the church and will vandalize or steal from the church.
