How can Vistaril help with Anxiety?

It says it is an antihistamine...that confuses me. It doesn't really sound like anything worth my time and it works like Benadryl? That's stupid. Just concerned.

How is it better than Xanax or Kolonopins? Those are my other options.

Vistaril, like many drugs, has more than one action. Sometimes, the other action has nothing to do with the type of drug it is. Yes, Vistaril belongs in the antihistamine class but it is also a drug that affects acetylcholine, serotonin and the brain causing a calming effect.

It is due to this calming effect that Vistaril is often prescribed for anxiety. It is a proven drug in the short-term treatment of nervousness and tension that may occur with certain mental or mood disorders.

Did you know that this drug is often given prior to surgery (part of the "pre-op") because of it's calming effect? It is to allay the patient's anxiety that is caused by impending surgery.

Always keep in mind that many drugs have more than one use no matter what their classification. Vistaril does not work like benadryl...benadryl is not given for anxiety. Not all drugs of the same classification are the same. If they were, we would only need one of every type drug for everyone that needs it.

I was prescribed Vistaril at 25mg about 2 years ago for anxiety. All it really does for me is make me sleep. I take it only when I absolutly have to and only at night so I can sleep when I am having anxiety. I filled my last prescription for 30 pills last May and still have about 15 left. It is not really suppose to be something you take on a regular schedule its more of a when you need it drug.
