I asked my grandmother the same question and she told me back in the day the farmers would hang these on their barns to let people know what produce thay had to offer.

Is it a blue star on a white field with a large red boarder? Then it is a service star, which means that they have lost a family member in the armed forces

If they ever had a purpose in the past, they have definitely just become a design issue now. Most country stores offer them in lots of sizes and washed colors. People use them inside and out just for the look. It's all about style.

I think these are just a decorative element---that add a nice touch....I see them for sale just about everywhere these days!
Some that are the colors of red white and blue surely can honor this great country that we live in!
