A good rule of thumb is to wait 1 hour between each puppy's birth and if no puppy is presented in that time frame, call your vet and ask their advice on the phone. This way, you can give the vet a description of her behavior, etc.

If your female is acting distressed, I wouldn't wait to call the vet at all.

If you have a pregnant dog, you should take her to the vet, get an ultrasound done to see how many puppies your waiting to appear and an overall exam of your female. Your vet could at that time tell you about what to expect and for danger signs to look for. So many things can go wrong...

I'm a dog breeder and have a special whelping room set up just for birthing puppies. One of my most important pieces in there is my cot! My husband and I take turns sleeping if labor takes a very long time. I've had it last nearly 24 hours and I've had some mom's who whelped all their pups within 2 hours all together for a litter of 9 healthy pups.

It depends on the dog. My Shih-tzu had 6 pups and took just under 3 hrs. from the time the first one was born til the last one was born. Some pups were 15 mins apart some were 12 mins apart and the last one took just over an hour before he decided to come out. No two dogs are alike so there is no set time that it takes. I know my dog though and I know when she is OK and would be able to tell if I need to rush her to the vet. If the dog seems likes she is resting between births and doesn't seem uncomfortable then don't worry, but if she seems like she is in pain and seems uncomfortable and restless then I would rush her to the vet; And if you are unsure always follow your gut instinct and take her to the vet, it is better to be safe than sorry later on.

Also always keep your vets number close at hand, in case of an emergency you don't want to go fumbling around trying to find it. Our vet gave us his home number to call him just in case we needed to get a hold of him in the middle of the night, since that's when most dogs tend to go into labor.

There are so many varying factors, unfortunately there isn't a set timeframe. I have seen bitches go 4+ hours between puppies, and labor for 24+ hours. I have seen others that have only 20-30 minutes between puppies and are done in a very short time. Do you know how many puppies she is expecting?

It does depend... It depends on how many, the bltches condition, the size of the dog sometimes plays a role... Saying 1 to 2 hours is not accurate. I have had some pups 5 hours apart. You have to be able to recognize trouble and if you can't, then you could lose the mom and pups. If you are concerned, go to the vet or put in a call.

Once labor starts it lasts about 15 min between each puppy. So depending on the dog and nature.... and how many puppies.... from an hour to 4....

Keep her comfortable, don't try touching things unless the situation seems dire, because mom dogs really know what to do.

Other than that ... call a vet if the situation seems odd or you need help.

Usually less than 24 hours. You don't really have to worry a lot as long as they don't push for more than 90 minutes on one puppy without giving birth to that puppy.

It depends on how many she's gonna have, and how long it takes her is gonna differ from dog to dog. It can take a really short time or up to twenty four hours.

I had one dog that went into labor and had 5 pups all in just 1 1/2 hours.
I had a littel dog that only had 3 pups and was in labor and delivering fro 15 hours total.

It depends on how many she has for one thing. Some have them fairly quickly and they are done before you know it. Some like to drag things out and take hours and hours.
