We only get 4% of our oil from Iraq...

But if you would like to ride your bike 25 miles to my job, work a full eight hour shift, and ride 25 miles back home and give me a paycheck, then sure, I won't even need a car.

Plus, the use of oil provides an efficient means of transportation for goods and services.

To answer the question, yes, we could ride bikes. However for the most part, bike rides are inconvenient and much more slow than we are used to, so we take cars instead.

For example, if you work 15 miles away from your home, it's much more practical to take a car than a bike to work. For one thing, in a car you won't get sweaty before work, and you will get there faster without having to worry about what time you need to get up.

Even so, I think that we should use public transportation! It's a good start to lowering pollution and making things easier for everyone. Buses are a great, cheap way to get to work and back, and anywhere else you might need to go.

But yes, I agree with you. If you are going to the store to pick up one or two things, and the store is barely a mile from your house, grab your bike instead of your keys! A little exercise can do a world of good.

I have a ninety mile daily commute. I ride a commuter train into the city, then a trolley to the area where I work, then bike the last mile and a half to the office. When I drive, my Pontiac Vibe (aka Toyota Matrix) gets 32 mpg.

It takes more time than driving, but I put the time to good use by catching up on my reading.

I like to think I am doing my part.

What the hell kind of question is this? Ride bikes. You must live above your job or you are a tree hugging, dope smoking retard that stills lives at home with your parents. Be an American. Drive a car. IT is the American way. Want to ride a bike, go to commy China.

1. Mainly because we are less urban than other countries. My wife and I go different directions to work each day. We both travel about 20 miles in opposite directions to get to work. Our distance from work is about "normal" for the people in our area. It wouldn't be an easy task to bicycle into work, especially since a large portion of the trip in on an Interstate highway that prohibits bicycles.

2. We aren't invading for more oil. The Government does not care what you pay for a gallon of gas. If you think they care about you, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you cheap.

3. Not everyone can ride a bike. And with the roads and drivers I encounter, it would be taking your life into your own hands.

Note to commuters:

g-day!

In every generation, people become more and more lazy, not caring about their health, but on the other hand, would you want to take all day to get to work if you worked far from home and show up sweaty in the process. Or do you think u could ride from Atlanta,Ga to Orlando, FL on a bike and not be dead afterwards, I mean not everyone's Lance Armstrong.

I ride a scooter and I get 100 miles to the gallon. Let's see you do jobs out of state with a bike.

I'll ride a bike when politicians stop flying all over the world in jumbo jets, especially Al Gore. He flies in a jet to make speeches about conservation. What a hypocrite!

85% of Iraqi oil is under contract to Compagnie Petrol De Francais. Tell the French to start riding bikes!

Interesting question. If it is oil you are concerned about maybe you should be asking the question:

Why do we all use plastic? Because the majority of "oil" is used to make consumer products that takes plastic.

Ending our oil problem starts with your iPod, and Xbox, not just the car....
