garlic should be rigid and on the white side. (the inside not hte skin)
when it starts spoiling, the garlic will turn yellowish like bad teeth. it might get some brown spots on the inside orthe outside. (i throw it away if its gotten to this state) some might cut out the brown spots and use it afterall.
if you squeeze it, it will be springy kind of like a peach or a straberry is.
sometimes, itll turn completely to greenish dust. but obviously it spoiled then.

Allium sativum L., commonly known as garlic, is a species in the onion family Alliaceae. Its close relatives include the onion, shallot, and leek. Garlic has been used throughout recorded history for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It has a characteristic pungent, 'hot', flavour that mellows and sweetens considerably with cooking.[1] A 'head' of garlic, the most commonly used plant part, comprises numerous discrete 'cloves'. The leaves and stems are sometimes eaten, particularly while immature and tender.

as long as it doesn't have green shoots growing or isn't soft (old/bad garlic will crumple under the slightest pressure), then you should be OK. Unless its a really large black spot that might indicate some kind of mold.

If it is not soft, cut the spot off and use. Is the spot in the center and is it green? If so it is normal, just getting ready to sprout, this will not hurt you.

If the spot is black then it is no good cut it out. If the whole clove is black then yes it is bad and you need to buy some more. Hope this helps.
