I keep hearing differing opinions from people especially with the trial of the false prophet Warren Jeffs. I DO know the LDS abandoned it in 1890 for Utah to become a state, correct? Need clarification please?

Officially they do not practice it. The LDS that do practice it are not recognized by the mormon church. However, they had to stop practicing due to federal law.

A good book to read about mormon polygamy is "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer.

We still believe in polygamy, since it has been part of our church history, but we don't practice it. It isn't only against the law of the land, but against the law of God right now. And polygamy wasn't abandoned so we could become a state. It was abandoned because 1- a law was inacted that made polygamy illegal, and we believe in following the law of the land, and 2- God commanded that it be stopped. It was causing too many problems for Utah, and the leaders were concerned. They prayed about this issue for a long time, and finally the answer was given to stop it.

Here is a site all about it. It will help to answer your questions.

latter day saints or Mormons. The church has officially forbidden polygamy, but some people, or sects witin LDS still practise. The more wifes a man gets the closer he will come to the highest levels in the heaven (when dead) is one of the principals for this reasoning.

here's a question that will answer that. How many guys out there would mind if you can get multiple young wives...honestly. With the church helping you financially, who would REALLY mind. Sure you'll be called a bigot, egocentric and a manwhore....but if it was accepted, would you do it?
as for LDS...how come none of this polygamy was used in the commercials? they should.

If Heavenly Father authorized it we would consider it. Since he has not, we put it out of mind. There is no chance that it will be restored under the current church leadership even if the courts ruled it legal. It was not abandoned to become a state. It was abandoned because the Church was going to be lose all property and the liberty of all the members through Federal prosecution.

The lds formally disapproves of polygamy, but some of its sects still practice a form of it. As you can see from Warren Jeffs.
The Mormons are not up front about their beliefs. They are not true Christians. Rather, they are followers of Joseph Smith.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doesn't not support or believe in it any more. They will agree with anyone that it's wrong. There is a throw-off sect that practices it but other Mormons have effectly excommunicated that sect.

As far as I know, they don't promote or condone it as a religion. The groups that do are "offshoots" of LDS. But the Church itself doesn't acknowledge them.
