Take the Q to Union Square (14th Street ). From there you can take the Brooklyn-bound L train to 1st Avenue and then walk north the final 9 blocks. You can also, as always, look up your start and end points on www.hopstop.com/newyork to get directions (adjusted for whether you prefer no transfers or a short walk, etc.) by subway and/or bus.

Take the 6 train to 23St (Park Ave) you may walk to 1st from there or jump on an estbound bus.

and n, r on 4th
you can try to get on those and take the m23 down to first ave or walk down
