Have you considered scopes designed for air rifles? They are usually much cheaper, and because air rifles (surprisingly enough) have a heavier recoil than most .22 rimfires, they can easily stand up to what your .22 will do to 'em. Also, consider getting "see-through" rings so you can still use your open sights for closer targets.

I would recommend a fixed 4 power scope for your 22 single shot Remington Rifle. You can mount a 1" scope easily with 22 Tip off style mounts, that allow you to mount any 1" diameter scope you choose. These Scopes can be purchased most anywhere and are even available at Walmart stores. The scopes will cost around $50,(Bushnell, Weaver are popular Scope Brands) and the price of the tip off mounts will depend on what brand you buy.
They are inexpensive though. I would suggest you take your gun to a local Gun-shop or stores like Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas, or ***** Sporting Goods. They will mount your scope for free if you purchase your scope at any of these stores......

If there is a Gander Mountain, Cabela's, or Bass Pro Shops in your area, go to one of them and ask to look through the scopes. Choose on which will work with what you plan on doing, and find the one which appears the clearest and with the sharpest image that you can comfortably afford. My wife did this for her Remington 700 and has been very happy with her scope. No I didn't tell her which one to buy, and she didn't care about the brand, just performance.

Like others here, I like the 4 power scopes. Stay away from Tasco. I suggest a Bushnell 4x32 - they are perfect for .22 rifles. Not too expensive and nice optics for the price.

I would suggest a 3x9-40 scope. tasco makes a decent one for around 40 bucks, it's perfect for rimfire in my opinion, even tho it's designed for centerfire. I have 2 of these scopes that I use on 2 different rimfire rifles. They hold zero, they are clear, I have one set up to shoot 100 yards, the other is set up to shoot 50 yards.

If you'd like a moderately priced scope, meaning they cost, just not premium, take a look at Weaver scopes. They are good for target shooting.
