I am from Ireland and am organising a working visa at the moment and booking a flight to Australia very shortly.
I will be travelling alone and unfortunatly do not have a clue of where to go. I have some family in Melbourne but would rather not impose on them.
Where would be best suited for me to find some work, make some friends and maybe meet up with some other Irish..?

I am 24 and male..

Depending on what you wish to do in Australia, any of our major cities would cater well for someone your age.I'm from rural Australia and most city dwellers believe their city to be the best.As I like Sydney,Perth,Melbourne and Brisbane out of the capital cities, there are some other major places such as Cairns Tropical Queensland, the Gold Coast south of Brisbane (major holiday destination) to the smaller country towns with lots of wild life, wide open spaces etc.Depending if you have a trade or not might be an influence where you stay as generally its harder to get a job in the rural areas except during fruit picking seasons etc.
We look forward to welcoming you to Australia and I am sure you will be made to feel at home once you get used to our everyday slang and easy going manner.

Sydney would be good. There is a genuine Irish pub in the Rocks called the Mercantile. I say "genuine" because it has many Irish people in its clientele rather than being called Bridget O'Reilly's or Mary Gilhooley's. There is also an Irish Club in Sydney (there's a big Irish Club in Mt Isa but that's a bit out of the way).

Sydney is a great city anyway. There's plenty of work, all the nightlife you could wish for and plenty of people to meet.

Don't go to Adelaide, you'll be bored with it within weeks...
Its nice if your old however. But Sydney has to be the best. Melbourne would also suit you due to its colder climate and not so harsh summer temperatures...

your family shouldn't feel burdened by your presence so go to Melbourne first
