As you can see from all the answers you have received that the jury is still out -- the consumer is king in the very fickle fight for dominance.
I hate to take sides on this subject but I will this time. As the saying goes the proof is in the pudding and the only proof you need is to go to a retailer that knows their stuff and see the formats for yourself. It is your decision and only yours.
I did and chose the BlueRay format. I bought a 2008 52" Sony XRB LCD TV, a PS3 and a seperate Sony BlueRay Recorder/Player. Yep I laid out a bundle close to $7000.
The last time I did this was in 1980 when I bought one of the very first Pioneer Laser disc players and a front projection TV and 120" screen for my family room along with the Pioneer Elite surround system. Again at that time I spent about $10000. Over the years I accumulated over 2500 Laser Disc movies and later more than a 1000 DVD's. I will now start collecting BlueRay discs.
Yes laser disc was replaced by DVD and DVD will be replace by a high def 1080P format of some kind.
The end result will be again, in the eye of the beholder and what is the best format for the type of recording and quality of the picture that is seen.
Personally, I think "apc_games_0" is a little on the radical and venomious side of the formats war.
Look for yourself and choose what you like. When properly displayed with a TV that will faithfully reproduce what is provided by the player I think you find BlueRay with a Sony XRB TV the finest reproduction of video yet to come on the market.

I think you can see from the other answers that the quality is the same, but there isn't a conclusion as to which format will prevail.
A couple of things if you really want one now.
Blu-Ray advertises way more
Blu-Ray is built into playstation, which is owned by sony, which is the largest manufacturer DVD's.
Blu-Ray is rentable through blockbuster and netflix.
Blu-Ray will probably win and if you are into video games the Playstation 3 is the better system so even if HD wins out, you have a great video game system.
Hope that helps.

Today's HD vs. Blue Ray battle is similar to the VHS vs. Beta war that began in the mid 1970s and continued well into the 1980s. In both cases, big-name electronics companies invested in different (and incompatible) technologies to meet consumer needs for video storage. A number of factors contributed to the success of VHS over Beta 20 years ago, but the jury's still out in the HD vs. Blue Ray war. One thing is a sure bet: one of the technologies will become the favorite among consumers, and the other will die out. Until one technology shows dominance, movie production companies will be hesitant to invest too heavily in either technology, and as a result, the availability of high definition movies will be limited. This means you'll have a restricted selection for the near future. Since HD and Blue Ray systems are both very expensive at this time, I suggest waiting until one technology begins to dominate and then make your purchase.

It doesn't matter that much right now. If you want one now, just pick one and get it. Just make sure to get a 2nd generation player; the 1st generation had tons of problems.
The reason I say "just pick one" is that this format war shows all the signs of dragging on for a long time. I finally decided it's not worth waiting for the resolution because I want to enjoy high-def DVDs now. If I pick wrong, well, then I've at least had the enjoyment during the interim. (Yes, I did have a Beta VCR back in the day. I bought it because it had Hi-Fi stereo, something VHS did not offer at that point in time. I got years of use out of that Beta before the format died.)
I'm currently awaiting delivery of my Toshiba HD-XA2...

Hold off for a while, there are issues with the current generations of players and HDTVs.
Dual-format players are coming onto the market soon, but that's not the whole story. Hi-def disks work at 24fps ( the same as cinemas ) ... however, the TVs work at 25fps ( with a refresh a multiple of this, 50 or 100 Hz ). This incompatibility leads to a loss of quality in fast-motion scenes.
So, a new generation of sets and players is needed, to have a compatible system for the two halves... these are working their way onto the market, but there is no standard badging scheme yet, so you can't tell if kit is compatible.

Considering the format war still going on and the limited availability of movies in either BlueRay or HDDVD, may I suggest a quality up-converter.
Not only will you save some money but you will be able to watch all those movies you already own instead of having to choose a format which could end up being obsolete very soon.
The following link is for a quality machine which can later on be modified for even greater quality.

My own modified model has been picked over BlueRay and HDDVD by all my clients who were able to compare the three.

in case you watch lots of action pictures (particularly contemporary ones), and easily would desire to work out them in 1080p, then definite, this is nicely worth it. in spite of the undeniable fact that, on the 2d question is greater complicated. Blu-Ray seems to be winning top now, yet HD-DVD could make a come again. i could wait until participant costs strengthen into greater low priced, particularly on the hybrid drives. -IR
