Yes. Especially if you own an hdtv or plan on purchasing one. First, it plays Blu-ray high definition videos. If you compare the cost of a standalone Blu-ray player vs the PS3, you're getting 2 systems for the price of 1 with a PS3. The only drawback would be if you prefer HD DVD vs Blu-ray. But that's another topic all together.

Second, the games are great so far. Though there are not many titles, there are some great ones just around the corner. Metal Gear Solid 4 anyone? Gran Turismo 5! In full HD! Rock Band? I know it's not an exclusive, but it'll be worth it!

Thirdly, media center capabilities. Yes, the Xbox 360 has similar features, such as this one. But the third party developer support for media center options is pretty good so far. The possibilities seem more open ended in my opinion for developers to use this system in various ways. Who knows what the future holds for alternate operating systems or software. I think it's one highly hackable unit.

Downsides are obvious. Lack of software at the moment, and cost. Those are the only 2 drawbacks I can find at the moment.

My advice. Read around. See what's good and bad for yourself. Better yet, go play a friend's PS3 and see what you think.

PEOPLE, STOP SAYING PS3 COST MORE MONEY!! ITS NOT TRUE!! read along why ps3 is cheaper

ps3 is WORTH THE BUY!!!!
i'll list some of the reasons

- ps3 has a built-in blu-ray player

- ps3 has much more and better exclusives, most of them cant go to xbox 360 because it cant handle that many data(DVD- 8.5gb, blu-ray 50gb)

- online is free for ps3 not like 360

- ps3 will have over 300 games released by this spring

- when developers get used to the system, the graphics will be WAY better than 360. should take them a year to get used to it

- playstation home is coming out this spring, its a virtual community where you can hang out with friends and customize your own apartment which xbox doesnt have(FREE)

- ps3 is a true HD console. xbox 360 upscale games to 1080p and ps3 DISPLAY games up to 1080p

- built in Wi-Fi

- xbox 360: 33% hardware failure
ps3: .2% hardware failure(see the decimal? less than 1%!)

- rumble returns in spring 2008

- you can upgrade your harddrive without voiding warranties with any 2.5 HDD, which xbox cant because you have to buy a xbox HDD
(they actually have the step by step on how to upgrade it on playstation.com)

those are the ones that i know right off my mind but there are much more reason than this

Prices as of today:
ps3- 80gb: $599
60gb: $499
xbox 360(premium)- $399 (if you want the accessories that ps3 comes with, that would add up to over 700 dollars)

In a word? Yes. It's the most advanced, most powerful console available. And more games are on the way that will take advantage of its potential. Yes, its more expensive than XBox, but PS3 is also a BluRay player--the future of DVD. You will have no regrets. XBox will be obsolete in a couple years. But PS3 will then be hitting its stride. Get a PS3, and you wont need to buy another gaming console--or another DVD player--for 10 years.

That all depends if the exclusive games out for it are interesting to you.

Personally, the 360 has more exclusive games that are interesting to me, and is less expensive than a PS3.

The PS3 has nothing that justifies its high price. Many of its games are on the 360 with identical graphics, or the PC with better graphics (and I do have a gaming PC), none of the big Playstation franchises have come out yet, like Final Fantasy, and others have gone multiplatform, like Katamari Damacy, or even jumped wholesale to the 360 exclusively, like Ace Combat. I don't care about Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) right now, and I don't need WiFi.

Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:

Almost a third of XBOX 360 are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%.
Let's compare them

PS3 has 7+1 kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3x2
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual DVD (9.5 gb).
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in card reader (except 20 gb version), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $

Graphics are stronger in PS3, due to RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. To estimate its power (roughly) - take 8600 Ultra nvidia graphics card, multiply it by 2 - get a result, still PS3 stronger, because 8600 Ultra runs on 400 Mhz and RSX runs on 550 Mhz.

PS3 has a chip from AGEIA company. It does to physics of the game same thing GPU (videocard processor) does to graphics. This card is on sale for PC. The price is around 350$.

Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 8 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it.

Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.

In 2008 we'll get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4 and other great exclusives. Here is the great link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......

PS3 online world will be free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.

In some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".

The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console.

Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years.

I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it.

in my opinion for the one good game it has, no, but xbox 360 is definitly the way to go you have halo 3, gears of war, and many others. If you have the xbox good, than you should buy the ps3 because the wii has some pretty bad games.
