I look to cook with wine that tastes good. Don't be fooled into thinking any cheap wine will do, you will want to taste it and see if you like the flavor before adding it to a dish you are creating.

The Wall Street Journal publishes a list of good wines at competitive prices. Here's a link to one of the wine columns by authors Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher. http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB119101216010042960.html

Here's a link to an article at CNN about cooking with red wine. http://www.cnn.com/FOOD/key.ingredient/red.wine/index.html

Talk with your local liquor store owner too. They should be getting good direction from their manufacturer's sales representatives and are generally pretty good at finding the right "fit" for what you are making.

Nicole,
I love Merlot for many Red wine dishes by B.B.Q. winery The wine comes in a square bottle and is decorated with flames all over the label. I pay $2.99 a bottle and its a great drinking wine which makes it a great cooking wine!

When ever you pick out a wine to cook with ask yourself, " would I drink this?" If your answer is Yes then cook with it! Try going out on a road trip and head out to a local winery or three! sample their wines and ask for suggestions.

Start with wineries you are familiar with then try a few other lables at restaurants from their wine list then head to your grocery store and buy a bottle here and there. Burgandy or just red wine lables are very generic try a Gamay Beugulait, Cabernet, Merlot or even a white zin or a dry champaign! Champaign is toatly awesome to cook with! Good Luck!

Whatever you do, don't use "cooking wine". It has tons of salt and tastes terrible. Never cook with a wine you wouldn't drink!

That said, if you are ok with chateu di Box, then go ahead. I like to use Sutterhome. Pretty cheap and I don't mind drinking it too much.

Save the expensive one to drink!

Any red wine is good to cook with.
Don't spend a lot of money on a bottle you are going to cook....drink the expensive, use the cheap in your food.

i've got in no way tried ingesting cooking wine. as quickly as I prepare dinner with wine i take advantage of something that i will drink too. Your food will style extra appropriate in case you employ a wine it rather is likewise in good condition for ingesting.

You should NEVER cook with a wine you would not like to drink. That being said, you do NOT need an expensive wine! Get the cheapest red wine you like to drink to cook with.

go to the grocery or liquor store, get the handle of red wine. Use that. You can get a handle for like 10 bucks and you can reduce it all you want. Drink the expensive stuff... Use the cheap stuff for your sauces.

When I need red wine for cooking, I look for the cheapest one on sale. I don't think it really matters when you are using it for cooking. Now, for drinking, that is definitely another matter.

Anything you are willing to drink is great to cook with, but it doesn't have to be too expensive.

I don't know of a good one to cook with, but Lambrusco is very delicious to drink. I don't know the name of the brand on it, nor the cost of it, but I enjoy it.
