Either they simply don't want to acknowledge any belief other than their own, or they think that without following a religion we can't understand it or know anything about it... Very false, but unfortunately very common. They think that because it works for them, it must work for everybody, and they think that you just didn't give it enough effort or learn enough about it because it didn't work for you. It's part of the whole bigotted 'My religion is better than yours, so I am better than you,' complex.
It happens alot when an atheist or agnostic person gets in an argument with a christian or member of a 'major religion' and wins... Rather than just admit they were wrong and admit that they're not better, they fall back on these things.. Which is pretty predictable, since many (Not all, but many) people use religion as a crutch for dealing with reality.
A quote by George Christoph Listenberg comes to mind... "With most men, unbelief in one thing springs from blind belief in another."
And as always, I stress to all of you that I do not have anything against all religious people or against any religion. I can only disagree with a person's beliefs but still respect their right to have them so long as they do the same for me. It's just the bigots, hypocrites, and in general anyone who uses (and often perverts) religious teachings to justify their actions and their ignorance, to themselves or to other people. There are some good religious people I respect, but unfortunately they are far outnumbered and outweighed by the people I've described.
There are, of course, some atheists and fellow agnostics who's blatant disrespect towards religion sicken me as well, but they don't outnumber the ones I'm okay with quite so much.
I gave a rather lengthy, heated answer that I'm quite proud of in one of those very questions, if you're interested look at my answer in "If your athiest why answer a spiritual question?" by Matt D, it's on page 2... I'm definately not getting a best answer from him. XD

I don't think they realize that this is a place to ask about religions and to offer answers on religions and religious matters.
I notice that most of those who ask that question are religious fundamentalists who want to turn this site into a born again prayer circle.

In here, that usually happens after a nonbeliever has challenged a Christian's beliefs to the point where they have nothing else left for a comeback.

Because either they feel threatened by us being here and challenging their beliefs, or they don't like to hear other people's opinions and just want to close their ears to all other viewpoints.

They're just surprised you're spending your time doing this now, instead of sniffing glue.
They don't realize multi-tasking has come so far.
