Suzy and strange looking yellow guy: National polls consistantly show this. I'm not anti-religion in the least. Perhaps anti hypocritical fundie wacko perhaps... It's a fact. As to whether we're on the "highway to hell"...well, that's just an AC / DC song.

Bajingo...LOL...point taken. 'Ol W and the boys certainly seem to think there's a national religion though.

Do you have anything to bolster this claim, to begin with?
UPDATE: If national polls show an increasing trend towards atheism, you should be able to post one. I looked, but haven't found it.

More like the path to enlightenment. The Internet has certainly helped - people who might never have had their beliefs questioned are being made to think. People have seen that religious faith can motivate people to do some pretty horrific things, and that has made a difference too. Dawkins has helped, Harris has helped. Various church scandals, particularly the ones involving prominent church leaders, have exposed a certain hypocrisy that doesn't sit well with some people. There is more awareness out there now. It would be nice if it was happening faster, but as long as it's happening, it's a good thing.

We live in a hedonistic society. We live in a place that glorifies selfishness, immediate gratification, and material gain. We live in a place that has brilliantly and subtly pushed relative morality and relative truth. We live in a place where the church has become contaminated, corrupt, misguided, and distracted thus making what should be its Christ like example null and void. There are certain appeals in living in prideful, I am my own God world, in my opinion it definitely appeals to our natures, so I would not be surprised that the number of unbelievers are going up, however I do find it odd that this kind of statistic is used for anyone's propaganda tool. What I mean by this is when I talk to some atheist they will sometimes use this to point to their opinion "that maybe there is still hope for us yet" , but I may talk to the same atheists a few days later or even a few hours later, in which they are convinced that the state of our country is horrible and that its future looks unpromising (of course it is the fault of christians) Whatever the case may be, I think our countries' values are basically non-existent, and I do agree that our future may not be the brightest, however a statistic like this i don't think necessarily indicates much. I am a christian, and if I heard the percentage of believers was increasing you would think that would make me happy right? Well I would be tempted to be happy over news like this, but I probably would be skeptical because I worry that mainstream christianity is way off track, and may not even be what it claims to be, namely christian. The statement that america is a christian nation I have felt is completely false for a long time. my point is that I believe and I think most people believe that our country is not doing the best and isn't going to be doing the best, and I don't think I could say I could give credit or blame to the rise or fall of one particular group. I think for the most part we are all the problem (myself included) I do not think religion or religious ways is the answer, however I must be honest and say I still believe Jesus is; I am convinced he is. Now I recognize that doesn't transcend any impact to you but I do believe it is sad that our culture has turned Jesus into a trivial joke, partly to the blame of people who claim to love him, and partly to the blame of a hedonistic culture resistent to humility, and absolute truth, a culture that would have all humans be their own God. Most of us unconsciously like the being our own God part and think to ourselves that we (individually) are doing a fine job of ruling our own lives, but again in the same sentence we will say however our culture is going down hill. It must just be that everyone else besides ourself can't handle this business of being our own God. Bottom line humans are a prideful, self destructive, helpless little being and the problem starts on each and everyone of our own back porches believer and non believer alike. By the way I'm sure this doesn't matter much, but Christianity is on a drastic rise in the Eastern hemisphere.

NO! It is because people are FINALLY waking up to the reality of religion and are starting to break the shackles of religion which held them back. The more non-believers the better society will become

As the general public becomes more educated, it is only natural that more of them would give up their religious views.
