I'm currently watching my dad and little sister's flight live from SNA to CVG and one of the things says Heading: 74 degrees.. what does that mean exactly? That they are heading 74 degrees north?

It means 74 degrees, rotated clockwise from north. So the vector is actually northwest, more west than north though.

Actually it is northeast, not north west... would more accurately be east northeast.
