My dog is severely under weight. He is 58 pounds and needs to be at least 78 to be healthy but we can't get him to gain! He can't get fatty or gressy foods and we just got some food from the vet but he doesn't like it! Please does anyone know some foods we can feed him that are "bland foods"? the vets say to keep him on a bland diet so he won't get upset tummy and lose more. He doesn't have heartworm or any parasites, so thats not the problem and he's seen lots of different vets, but he looks like he is going to fall over and I don't want to lose my puppy!

more detail-
he is a great Pyrenean. And he's had this problem since get a bad bach of food (not related to the recal last year) His diet right now is ID dry and canned food from the vet with rice and boiled ground beef when ever his bowl is empty. He was just in the vets becaues he needed to be IV'ed over night and she said the best right now is to keep a blad diet meaning no gressy/fatty foods, no ordernary dog food.

When my vet tells me to feed my pups a bland diet... it means rice and chicken... sometimes some canned pumpkin or non-fat plain organic yogurt mixed in.

I had a super skinny dog once but it was because he had a super fast metabolism. As he got older it slowed and he put on weight. Try buying a better dog food like Ukanuba or Purina 1. Buy both canned and dry mix the canned very well with the dry food. Add a little milk or an egg or 2. I guarantee he will eat it. When you see that the bowl is empty fill it up!

20 lbs under weight?? What are you feeding the dog? You should feed him 2 meals a day of a good quality kibble. If you have to buy some canned food to feed. It's far more fattening than kibble. I can't imagine that the vet isn't worried about a dog that is 20 lbs under weight.

I remember when my mother's dog became ill and was rapidly losing weight and not eating much. She fed him a mixture of canned dog food and some baby cereal (rice) watered down. He did well on this mixture and gained some poundage in a short amount of time.

Try Bil-Jac frozen dog food. You thaw it in the fridge, and feed it cold or you can heat it in the microwave for a few seconds to make it more palatable.I've never known a dog to refuse it,and it really helps to put weight on.You might also try a good dry puppy food.

Hmmmm.... I'm not so sure what you mean by "bland foods", but can he eat meat? My dog doesn't enjoy eating his dog food, (we feed him Caesar,) so we usually give him steak, chicken, etc. on top of it (in cubes of course.) Of course, this may lead to your dog becoming spoiled... I'm sure I didn't help. Good luck! I hope you don't have to lose him!
