i think it's when you have to do what's 'right' rather than what you want to do! like not smoking when you're trying to give up for example, or staying away from someone you like but you know they're bad for you. i'm 22, still only a babie!

Its being able to control everything feelings, emotions even sexual urges and if you know in yourself it is wrong and that if you did something wrong, harmful or frightening to another living being then you must take control of the situation. There are many different ways this can occur but if you are faced with any situation and I have then you have to be so very care full. In the old days we were taught "not to rock the boat" (In case you fell in the water and drowned ) and that is quite a good way of looking at it. I'm 58

Age 54
Self-control means the ability and practice of
choosing what you will or will not do, how you act, respond, speak or even what you choose to think about --
and the ability to stay within the boundries you have pre-decided. The ability to control one's self is to live within the boundries you have set for yourself.

For Christians, self-control is one of the gifts supplied by the Holy Spirit for the ability to live-out one's faith.

Female - age 51

Self-control is not rising to the bait.

The bait can be:
Words/non-verbal gestures intended to goad
Words/gestures accidentally inflamatory
Actions intended to goad (eg: mooning)
Actions accidentally inflamatory (eg: vehicle bump)
An intended, acceptable action that inflames (eg: in a boxing match)

Sometimes, external influences affect the situation making people lose control:....

mob rule (eg: street justice for a suspected paedophile)
mass hysteria (eg: someone shouts "fire!" and everyone panics)
mass fanaticism (eg: football fans losing control, or religious mass hysteria)

Other external influences on self-control include:
Drugs
Tiredness
Adrenaline (eg: during sporting activity)
Testosterone (see football hysteria!)
Pre-menstrual syndrome

These all make it harder not to rise to any bait, making loss of self-control more likely.

Children have to learn self-control. They discover this at around the age of 2 (the terrible twos) when they try to opt for uncontrolled behaviour in the face of lessons to the contrary.

The above all deal with control of emotions. There is also physical self-control (eg: or not pee-ing until you're at a toilet, or picking your nose at the dinner table). This too has to be learned (potty training?).

Hope this helps.

It means making choices that are long term, rather than what I want right now. I'd rather sleep in, but I have to go to work. I'd rather spend my money on clothing but paying off my bills is more important. Those kinds of things. I'm 28
