hand gun? bad idea. Unless you become a marksman, and have a license to carry a concealed weapon, a hand gun is virtually useless.

However, for home protection... a shotgun is the way to go.

no hand guns for home or personal protection.
a shotgun is the way to go for home protection.
a hand gun has one projectile and you HAVE to be accurate.
In an emergency situation would you be able to point and shoot accurately every time?
a shot gun shell has lots of projectiles that scatter so you do not have to be as accurate.
A bullet fired from a handgun may miss the intended target and travel through the wall (or in the air) and hit an unintended target. The shot(pellets) from a shot gun will not penetrate a wall and carry to an unintended target.
Definitely for a first timer a shotgun is the way to go .

More people are injured, maimed or killed by their own weapons than protected by them. (Many, many more people.)

Most people cannot shoot another person, which is how the weapon is taken from them and used ON them.

You have to have special permission to carry a concealed weapon.

More weapons are stolen during burglaries of private residencies than from any other source. (That's how they get to the street) Where are they? Every burglar knows if you are looking to steal weapons to look in the master bedroom, under the mattress or pillow, or very close to the bed.

A big dog is a better deterrent to preventing crime. You don't need a pit bull, a big lab or German Shepard will do the job nicely. If you are not allowed pets, a self defense course is a really good idea. You do not need a black belt, simply learning self awareness is a major factor in deterring violent crime.

Would be attackers look for two criteria when choosing their victims. Availability and vulnerability. Something as simple as having keys in hand, and not fumbling for them, can make the difference between an attack and self preservation. A growling dog while you unlock the door is even better.

Good luck.

Peace.

As some have said, a shotgun is a good choice, but for a handgun, a medium frame double action revolver in .357 Magnum also works. This could be a S&W Model 19 or Taurus Model 66, or any about that size. You can practice with .38 Special to learn how to use it, and use the .357s for what have been referred to as "serious social purposes."

I suggest the cap. It's great for novices.

Take a self defense course.

Tell her to move out of the crappy area that she's living in so she doesn't feel the misguided need to own a gun
