equal pay (or sometimes even less)

I agree. If they want me to pay their salary then they can come serve the food at my house. They get paid to do their job just like everyone else and yes, I'm sorry they get paid less than minimum wage, but no one made them go into that line of work. Last I checked a tip was to reward someone for a job well done, not something expected for someone dropping a plate in front of me. If someone goes above and beyond, then they really deserve a tip.

Yeah, but those people are illegals...

Seriously, the whole tip thing is a scam by restaurant owners - don't blame waiters. Tips were supposed to be about good service. Then the restaurants lobbied the government to include tips in minimum wage standards - whether they get tipped or not - and kept wages low, so restaurants could keep prices on their menus artificially low. BTW, waitstaff pays taxes on those tips even if they have cheap customers who don't leave any, or a slow night with few customers.

Personally, I think tips should be abolished; restaurants should be required to pay a decent wages and their menu prices should reflect that. It annoys me to order two menu items at $9.95 and end up with a $30 bill!

The fact of the matter is, the waiter's job is to take people's orders and bring them their food. For a job such as that where there is much communication, waiters have to go beyond what their job is to do, and be friendly and attentive. For that reason, tips vary in prices, even though people say you should pay 20% of the price of the meal, i dont agree; you may not get the same quality service as the meal.

For good service and do to the fact that Restaurant owners
have a pact (at least in Michigan) and have a waiver on
paying minimum wage. Believe an owner can get by for
$2 an hour, almost like indentured servants. At any rate,
at 15% you're helping pay her wages and barely keeeping
up with the income taxes.

Because they are waiters! Others don't want to be, so don't complain, do the work and receive your just pay. Putting up with rude demanding people is stressfull and very difficult to do without becoming just like them! Then you won't last long as a Waiter because the public will not tip a rude, uncaring, negligent Waiter.

There is no other job in this country that gets paid as little as waiting tables. Even the restaurant hostess and delivery drivers get minimum wage. That being said if I get really bad service the only tip I give is to management to fire that server. Have you ever waited tables, especially in a busy restaurant? It's not just hard, it's brutal.

Many states allow waiters to not be paid full minimum wage, so you should take that into account.

Delivery drivers also, are usually not REALLY paid, so if you don't tip them they could even be operating at a loss.

because in other industries where you're being paid $2.00 per hour, you don't have to work hard AND kiss people's ***'s. Also, you look cheap if you don't tip (and if you go there a lot, they start to remember you, and hock luggies into your food of extra flavor)

Because the minimum wage for waitstaff is maybe $3.00/hr. They don't get paid on the same scale the rest of us do.
