yes, and the key will be, as in any war, air superiority. The Iranians were said to have a sophisticated air defense. The Syrians were known to have the "best" air defense in the world.
That has been proven to be false and the Iranians must be rethinking their fiery bluster about now. Have a look at the link detailing the Israeli raid on the Syrian's Nuclear cache.
The Syrian silence is indeed very telling. Any opportunity to accuse the Israelis of war crimes would not go un-missed. I'm quite sure they weren't giving the Israelis a break on this one. They scrambling and saying WTF!

Yes they could if they were at war with Iran. The casualities would be heavy and the National Guard and Reserves would have to be activated in extremely largs numbers-talking a very high percentage all at once not units for a while then back to the States and going back to National Guard and Reserve locations like now. They would be activated all at once and then sent until the "war" was over since no additional backup exists.
I would think that the high level military does not want to get involved in a war with Iran but probably do have plans and would follow orders. Most have stated that in the public and too Congress but the bottom line is that the military will follow orders.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the jingoistic, chest thumping bravado I see here. I think you're asking the wrong question here. It should be, why should the USA go to war with Iran? What do we get out of it, and do the costs outweigh the benefits?
Any war involving Iran will cause a big spike in the price of petroleum - even more than it is now. Iran controls 20% of the worlds crude oil. Another 20-30% comes from the Gulf states nearby. The economies of many countries will be immediately affected by a giant jump in petroleum prices.
Iran isn't a sitting duck of a nation. They have 350,000 regular troops, another 150,000 Republican Guards. They have a fair amount of military weapons/arms from various nations. They do have some old US arms and aircraft left over from the Shah's regime but they probably can't keep those in service too long due to a shortage of spares. There is a pretty good amount of institutional combat knowledge present due to the Iran Iraq war of 20 years ago. They do have short and medium range tactical missiles that can take out some naval ships in the area.
If you wanted to draw a scenario, yes, the US military forces can inflict a lot of damage on Iran. But so can the Iranians. Also look at logistics - which is the lifeblood of any military. The Iranians are fighting for their country and have short supply lines. They can strike the US force a short distance away. The US has to supply its force in the Gulf from a long ways, and in a protracted conflict it would be increasingly difficult. The US forces are already having a difficult time in Iraq keeping its bases safe there. The situation becomes more complicated with trying to attack Iran and keep the situation in Iraq under control.
And let's say you defeat the Iranians (at a very high cost). What do you do next? Occupy the country? They're twice the population of Iraq. Where are the resources to do that?
In short, to attack Iran would be an incredibly foolish undertaking that would bring more harm to the USA domestically and internationally than any potential gain that can be realized.

Um no, we have the greatest ally in the world when it comes to Iran. The youth of Iran. They are unhappy with the way that the country is being ran. If we clandestinely support them in their efforts then we can win an ally eventually in them. However once the first boot hits the ground and once the first stray bomb whipes out a village, they are going to do what a lot of Iraquis are doing and take up arms against us. And then we will be fighting people at every angle. And if we do attack Iran we will have several other nation states to worry about.

They actually have a real army. However, with out resources spread out so thin, it would be rather difficult. Iran knows this, and this is why they have been so loud in taunting us.
Its not about the PC crowd. Its about realism. Great leaders are well versed in the art of war, and are familiar with Sun-Tzu's adage, that a war is won before the first battle is fought. Which means that careful planning and strategy are necessary before you even fire the first shot. Had Rummy and Co. adhered to that, we might be in a different position. BUt seeing as how Bush, Cheney and Rums lack the bravery and courage and sense of duty required to serve you get a chickenhawk war. The Generals warned against it, but they di dnot listen, I mean what do they know, having lived and studied this their whole lives.

Defeating Iran is not the problem,, then what do we do with Iran after.
As I see it we would have three choices;
#1 back out with the job half done like we did in the first gulf war.
#2 become embroiled like we are in Iraq
#3 flatten the place and then leave.
Tough to get at the oil when it is encased in glass tho'.

We could, but thats not what the problem is. Iran knows we could win, but the damage done to the middle east especially following the invasion and occupation of Iraq would be too heavy a blow to our world reputation to fix, and we would lose more allies. We need to get another nation to hold back Iran, but we do not want to fight them, we want to restrict them from getting any kind of nuclear weapon, and if they got one of those it would probably be the end of the world, and invading would just lead them to use it. So I do not see U.S. military invasion of Iran happening anytime soon. We could destroy them though.

We don't have a war with Iran, so your question is a mute point.
Don't get the cart before the horse.
A better one would be, "How do we prevent a war with Iran?" now wouldn't it?
g-day!

We would walk all over Iran as if they were the carpet in your house. We are way to technologically advanced and too big for them to put up much of a fight.
