here in america we tip the waitress, which means we give her/him a few extra dollars, like 5 or 10 dollars more depending how well they served you.

I hope you're joking. A tip in an American restaurant is a specified amount of money added to the bill which will go directly to the waitress. For good service, 20% to 25% of the bill is reasonable. For average service, 15% is reasonable. For below average service, anywhere from 10% to one penny. One penny is not the same as giving nothing. It makes the point that they did a really lousy job, where no tip at all just seems like you do not have a habit of tipping.
The reason for the line on the bill is because it's up to you how much you add, and then the total will be subtracted from your credit or debit card. In the Old Days, before plastic money, you would typically leave the next larger whole dollar amount. So, for example, if the bill was $8.25, you'd leave a $10 bill, and the waitress would get the change.
Waitresses and waiters are paid less than the minimum wage because it is understood they are working for tips as well. It's supposed to be incentive to treat you well, and it works wonders the second time you go to that restaurant if you over-tip somewhat.

The very fact that you would understand the word tip has two meanings and would want to give her advice (tip) as opposed to money (tip) indicates you are most probably an american and this is a hoax. However, against the very small possibility that you're serious - food servers in this country make considerably less than minimum wage from their employer. They are expected to earn their living from their tips. If anyone was rude, it was you. If you stiffed me like that, I probably would have tripped you on the way out.

You are so funny! I had to laugh out loud when I read your question. Work on that routine a bit and you can be a stand-up comedian. (Your tip was priceless!!! I'm going to use it on the next waitress who treats me badly.)

in america, we subsidize the welfare state by giving extra money to people that don't really need it. even if you gave them a 25% tip, they still be rude.
