First of all the original writings of the ( pre)old testament had numerous references to the wife of god and the children of god , as well as other minor gods . The wife of god was considered an equal to god , but the children less so .
Second , Many people living around the time of Jesus also claimed to be the son of god . The old testament stated that a messiah , most likely a son of god , would come down to help the Israelites during a period of great turmoil . This was such a period and the people of that time were very superstious . We now accept the superstitious nature of the Roman and Greek gods , But the Jews (and others) were also very superstitious . This is why they sacraficed animals and some even still believed in sacraficing humans .
(All over the planet superstition reigned where there was a lack of scientific teaching . The Incas were sacraficing 100's of thousands to the Sun God ! The Hindus were beliving in animal gods . People are wired to need to believe something .)
There were many , many Jewish cults , as well as Roman Cults , all with their own son of god ,around the time of Christ leading up to the time of the creation ( by men ) of the Catholic Cathechism . The purpose of the Catholic Catechism was to try to organize these religions under one son of god .
According to the New Testament ,Jesus made many statements and actions that could clearly be interpeted as NOT being the son of god . There are some minor indications that he allowed those that wanted to believe he was a son of god, to believe that . In order to get recognition as a religious leader at that time you needed to proclaim a special bond with god such as being his son . These people were very uneducated and superstious farmers and local traders . The Rabbis of the time fostered many superstious beliefs upon the Jews . ( And people in Rome were having trouble with logical thinking due to povety , lead poisoning and alcohol abuse .)
Having said all this , it still must be pointed out that the New Testament is a compilation of selected works that were also edited to serve the purpose of creating a Catholic Catechism . Some of the works are clearly inaccurate and others clearly fictional .

Jesus is never recorded in the Bible as saying the exact words, “I am God.” That does not mean, however, that He did not proclaim that He is God. Take for example Jesus’ words in John 10:30, “I and the Father are one.” At first glance, this might not seem to be a claim to be God. However, look at the Jews’ reaction to His statement, “We are not stoning you for any of these, replied the Jews, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:33). The Jews understood Jesus’ statement to be a claim to be God. In the following verses, Jesus never corrects the Jews by saying, “I did not claim to be God.” That indicates Jesus was truly saying He was God by declaring, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). John 8:58 is another example. Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I am!" Again, in response, the Jews take up stones in an attempt to stone Jesus (John 8:59). Why would the Jews want to stone Jesus if He hadn’t said something they believed to be blasphemous, namely, a claim to be God?

...John 5:18, for one, observe:
...18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
**
...Also, John 10:31-33, observe again:
31 Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him,
32 but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"
33 "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."
**
...John 10:30 - He says, "I and the Father are one."

many places when he said ' I am'', I am one with teh father and so on '' I am'' was the jewish name for God. the pharasies knew what he was claiming and that was why they wonted to stone him.
John 14:10-12 (New International Version)
10Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father
Matthew 22:31-33 (New International Version)
31But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 32'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'[a]? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."
33When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

Jesus never did claim to be God. He said the father was greater than him. Jesus prayed to God the night before he died. Why would he pray to himself if he were God? Also, Jesus died, God cannot die. So, Jesus knew he was powerful but only through the power of God's holy spirit which he declared came from his father, Jehovah. When the Pharisee's asked him who he was he admitted he was God's son, not God himself!

I believe that God Jesus and the Holy Spirit are all parts of the Godhead and I believe that Jesus did claim to be God. He refered to himself as "I Am That I Am." The reason that the scribes and Pharisees wanted to stone Him for calling Himself that, was because that was one of the names that God had given Himself. They were fully aware that He had just declared Himself to be God !!
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, THE MIGHTY GOD, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
John 13:10 "I and My Father are one".
John 1... In the beginning was the Word, And the Word was with God, and the Word was God....14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God...
John 20:26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and see my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and put it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. Thomas answered and said unto him, MY LORD AND MY GOD. Jesus saith unto him, Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
Titus 2:13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great GOD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST,
1 Timothy 3:16 God was manifest in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.
Colosians 2:9 For in Him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily,
Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying " All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you: and lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen
Holy Spirit = God
Acts 5:3 But Peter said , Ananias, why has satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained was it not your own?And after it was sold was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.
There are over 333 prophesies in the Old Testament concerning the Coming Messiah. Most were fulfilled at His birth and the rest will be fulfilled at his second coming.A mathematician, Peter Stoner, had his graduate students calculate what the odds would be of any one person fulfilling just eight of these prophesies. He found the chance was one in 100,000,000,000,000,000 !Only a God who knows the future could have revealed these prophesies to those that He would have record them in His Word.
I believe what the New Testament says that Jesus spoke of Himself. I believe that the Old Testament reinforces what He spoke of Himself. I also do not believe the disciples would go to the grave for a lie. Therfore if the Gospels are true, then I must profess as Thomas did that Jesus is "my Lord and my God." May the Holy Spirit open your eyes and capture all your thoughts.

He never said "I'm God" at all..
People often use John 8:58 as proof, but this verse is often mistranslated in many Bibles. God said "ego eimi ho on" Exodus, but Jesus just said "ego eimi." If Jesus was actually going by the the title in Exodus, he would have said that he was "ho on" (The being).
