OK, I am totally confused why my 1 year old female spayed daschund is humping my 4 mo old male kitten. The kitten isn't neutered yet because he is too young, but he hasn't hit his "time" either so I don't understand why my girl dog would want to hump him? My dog is constantly licking everything also (including herself). Her breath stinks from licking herself all of the time and it keeps me up at night because it is so noisy. We have had the kitten for a little over a month now and this behavior just started a few days ago. They play well together and seem to be best friends...until my dog goes humping crazy and the cat just wants to run away. Is this normal?? And why does she lick herself and everything else ALL the time??

I'm more concerned with the licking of herself nonstop and the horrible breath as a result. I understand the humping is a form of dominance..but whats with the licking and the smell?

She is doing it to show dominance over the kitten.

The one thing people assume when they see a dog humping is that it is a sexual thing. Which is totally not the case. Unless you have a female dog in heat. Otherwise it is done for dominance purposes.

First your dog should see you as the Alpha and you should correct her anytime you see her trying to hump the cat. Using a spray bottle and firmly saying NO usually does the trick. And eventually you will see her doing that less often to the cat.
The licking could be an allergy or an obsession.

1. a male dog is going to hump, this doesn't change whether the female can be bred or not. 2. no unless she didn't get spayed properly, she will not get pregnant because she had her ovaries removed

Sounds like what my dog use to do and have...you should get her checked. My dog had an ongoing urinary track infection and had to go on meds for months til it went away, only to come back.

The humping may be her seeing other dogs.goodluck

One word: dominance.

Dogs don't hump because they're horny.
