I wash my face twice a with cleansing cream. Once in the morning when I wake up and once at night in the shower. When I'm done washing my pores appear lighter. But a few hours later they appear to be back to their original darkness. What's going on? doens't this mean that this extensive washing my face is pointless?
I don't use make up and only on occasion do I use lotion.

Try this
Before cleansing with the cream, wipe your face with rubbing alcohol and let dry, do it a second time then dry with a paper towel, this will help draw out the oils in your skin

I'm not sure what cleansing cream you're using; but you need to use a product that is 'non-comedogenic'. That means that it does not block up the pores. You can also get face foundation that is 'non-comedogenic'. If I remember rightly, 'Neutrogena' does a range of face cleaning products that do not clog the pores.

At the moment I'm using a 'Simple' product called Softening Facial Cleansing Mousse & then a face toner by 'L'oreal' called Visible Radiance Renewing Gel Toner, which is supposed to reduce the appearance of pores (among other things). They both seem to do a good job.

If you are prone to combination skin, your pores will look like they are blacker/fuller even after simple washing. Try using cleanser's for "deep poor cleansing", and also, rinse with cool to cold water. I find that really helps in closing them after cleansing. Biore makes a nice line of pore minimizing products.
