I don't get this. If there was a god and he had made the universe and all, hell even if he'd made humans from scratch (sneakily leaving lots of evidence that we evolved from other lifeforms) why would we pray to him?
Does he need constant butt kissing? Does he need to be told he's so great and wonderful? How could the creator of the whole universe be so insecure and mentally weak?
I don't think I'd be like that if I was god. If I met, say an enormously intelligent, powerful alient entity it would be ok to be respectful, to listen to it - but worship it? I don't understand the religious mind at all. So tell me theists, why do you pray?

I just don't get it 'thanks for listening' if you or your family are hurt and need help doesn't god know already? For someone who knows everything he sure seems to need a lot of updating. Anyway, I'm listening.

hey leviathan,i agree with your point that god need not be reminded that he is great , this is still on our side of the arguement.but this arguement cannot console a common man.this is a fact because, for example let us take the case of a young boy, who is told. his mum's name is sandy, say when he is around 4yrs of age. if you go to him and ask what is your mum's name he says sandy, even though there is no logic behind this answer. this is the same case with god (ie) even though there is no evidence that he has created the universe it is believed he did it.some things in life has to be believed without any questioning for a balanced life hood of a man.actually speaking people hardly pray from their heart, coz thhey want to show of in front of people.there are very scanty amount of people who really pray from their heart, coz they respect god from their heart.a man who knows god is great does not preach his deity going around.it is up to us to believe in god or not

Your presumption is wrong...."If there is a god...."
Sweets, aint no body up there. The sky daddy stuff is fairytales. Even most fundies know that. Even Mother Theresa knew it. Read her letters... Google Mother Theresa+letters.
Theists pray because:
1. They have been brainwashed since childhood
2. Aren't very bright
3. Aren't very educated
4. Fearful
5. Don't know that there are other ways to think
The true born again crhistians are heavily represented in prisons... tell you anything?
And probably a dozen other reasons.
Read all the crap you will be getting..."I pray because it makes me feel good, I have a relationship with god... yadadayday..".. oh, good.

God is mercifull.God has created us only to worship.we are His slave &we should follow His command.praying is not curse for us but it's a gift of God.offering prayer(salath)..keeps us away from commiting sin &bad deeds which can lead us to the Hell!! praying(dua'a)is that what we ask from our God.what we need ...etc you are not God so you cant say any thing...none good like God.

They pray to make themselves feel better. There is a psychological soothing in prayer. When they pray, they feel that they have actually helped the one they pray for. Instead of physically helping, they ask an imaginary being to help for them. Why waste your time taking a sick person to and from the doctor when you can say, "god, please help him" and you are done. They could just get off thier holy as*es and help, but that would be too much work.

One who has no faith can't understand, that is your right you have free will ..You can head to the call or leave it alone... If you are apart of the kingdom of God then your eyesight and hearing change with spiritual understanding.. It is not complicated nor does it look like the majority of the church we see today...You have to seek it to find and own it for yourself....
Peace!!!!

Prayer is simply talking to God.
As the son of God and father they should talk and have a good relationahip.
Pray without ceasing.
There's a power in praying.

We pray to communicate with God. God is the reason you are here, and you should have respect and thank him for that.

A good question.
Because prayer, like everthing else associated with an invisible sky pixie, is an utter waste of time and energy.

I pray because I'm intelligent.
I can look outside right now and see thigns that no man can create. ie, the Sun, the trees, the birds on trees, fruit on trees that are made for me and my body, water etc etc.
I also pray to the LORD because I should, why shouldn;t I be greatful and thankful to a being that loves me enough to give me life and eyes and ears and people that love me. If this being has the power to create or take all these things, like the sun, the whole univers and everything that's in them, why would I want to upset HIM?, that wouldn't be intelligent at all. Take care!

To have a relationship with God we need to talk to him and also take time to listen to him.
Prayer can do both, it is not all about telling.
Peace be with you.
Oh and by the way, you are not God.
