I am often told that Christians get their morals from the Bible.
For instance, the reason homosexuality is wrong is because it is condemned in the bible, they will then proceed to cite Leviticus. Then I ask, why they choose to follow that part of Leviticus but ignore the parts about stoning children to death who curse their parents. THen they say, oh no thats the OT, we do not follow OT laws anymore.

My question is, if you do not follow OT laws anymore, then why are the Ten Commandments important?

Isnt the way you choose what parts of the OT to follow is by meshing it with contemporary moral values? If this is true then it is clear that you do not get your morality from the Bible. Right?

You really nailed it. Either we go for all the old testament or we pick and choose. Of course my favorites are the hillbilly preachers that actually want to bring back stoning

You're right. People often ignore the fact that the Bible is an entire book. Romans 15:4 says, "For all the things that were written aforetime were written for our instruction, that through our endurance and through the comfort from the Scriptures we might have hope".

Jesus and his apostles often made referrence to the OT.

The The Greek word for Testament is di‧a‧thekes which actually means “covenant." Many modern translations correctly read “old covenant.

In short, the "old covenant" required that animal sacrifices be made to atone for sins, etc but on the night of Jesus' death he instituted the "new covenant". Because of his sacrifice for all mankind, this served to unify the Jews and the Greeks plus this negated the need for animal sacrifices.

The New Covenant consisted of two laws, "love God with your whole heart, soul, and mind", and "love your neighbor as yourself." This pretty much sums up the Ten Commandments.

In counseling Roman Christians, Paul cited the sixth, seventh, eighth, and tenth commandments, adding: “And whatever other commandment there is, is summed up in this word, namely, ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’”—Romans 13:8, 9.

Without the Hebrew Scriptures we would be lacking a lot of details about man’s origin, the cause of death, and the Edenic promise that the Serpent’s head will be crushed by the seed of the woman, the Flood of Noah's day,why blood is sacred, etc. The point is the entire Bible was inspired by God - we don't get to pick and chose and twist scriptures to fit our needs.

Remember the Bible is filled with numerous ancient customs and traditions of the Jews. Stoning to death is a tradition practiced by both Jews and Arabs; there may not be religious laws.
The Ten commandments was different; it was a religious law given by God himself. There is a Law which says 'Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother;" However, there's no Law in the Ten Commandments that says to stone women and Children to death.
The Book of Leviticus in the old Testament may well be a collection of old Jewish customs.

Most Christians don't follow the Old Testament laws, the 10 commandments are important because in the New Testament Jesus says that that part is still important and valid.

If you would read the whole Bible (and not cherry-pick which verses you want to use "against" Christianity), you would know that Jesus lists the Ten Commandments in the New Testament, as still being relevant and must be obeyed (Matthew 19:19). Next time do your homework before you attempt to try to "judge" Christians' morality.

Jesus intervenes for us. now its not just sin and die, now we have more time to repent(note that when we pray we should ask all in the name of jesus christ amen..) Also there is no need for animal sacrifice(since jesus died for us)
The ten commandments should still be followed. And on Mattews 5:17 its comfirmed.
i think that if We had the old God that loves us but was very strict as back then, then this world wouldn't exist.
as for the children, i think the parents are the ones responsible for that if the kids arent old enough to understand what they are doing but if a child is old enough to understand what's right or wrong then they should account for their sins, and should pray for forgiveness...

That is exactly why we need and Jesus gave us one Church to guide us through the Holy Spirit to help us know what God wants us to do.

Otherwise we are subject to the failings of a man to help us.

As a former Protestant, I used to rely on a "Personal relationship" and my own feeling about the bible. I now realize that there is no way I could ever truly comprehend all of the books in the bible, how translations have affected them, and the times in which they were written it. So should I follow a minister with 5 years of education, or a Church with 2000 years of history?

I became Catholic.

Peace!

New Testament- Romans 1:18-28.
Verses 26-27- Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.Men committed indecent acts with other men,and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion."
The Bible is consistent from cover to cover. The definition of sin never changes. God is the Source of our moral code.

Homosexuality is wrong (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). The Bible describes it as strange fornication (Jude 7). It is extreme rebellion against God’s design of humanity as male and female (Romans 1:26-27). It cannot be overlooked, but it can be overcome.
