Ask for the most experienced nurse there to give it. They can often do this without you even feeling a thing.
Concentrate on something else - focus across the room, out the window, etc, and look at something over there. Occupy your mind - why did that building get painted that way? What kind of person drives that car? What's inside that cabinet?
Finally, realize that it's just a quick poke, and you'll say to yourself, "That was it? That's all there was?" in about 20 seconds.

Shots are not as bad as you remember them as a child. The Menigitis vaccine is given intramuscularly, in the deltoid muscle. So I would take a dose of Tylenol or ibuprofen about an hour before your appt. This will help with any pain . Ask the person giving the shot to have you sit on the end of the exam table and place the table in the a sitting position so that you can sit back against the table .This will help you relax. No matter how nervous you are , this only takes a minute so just sit still and keep your arm as relaxed as possible. I'd stay sitting down for a few minute after words if you truly get light headed from getting shots. Also, intramuscular injection pain is relieved much faster if you move that muscle as much as you can after words.
Good luck! The meningitis vaccine is a good one!

I used to faint in school when it was shot day just the smell of alcohol pads set me off. I had to lie down to have a shot. Yes I was a baby. I am better now but I have the nurse slap my arm where she is gonna give the shot and then it doesnt bother me so much. And sit for a bit after so I am sure I am ok.My son took pills for meningitis prevention cant you?

First remember, there have been deaths from menengitis and this shot is to keep you from GETTING it. Now, the pain of the shot or getting the illness. I've had cancer...I've had a lot of blood taken and a lot of shots and granted, no one LOVES them, it is much better than the alternative.
Go in, turn your head .... and it will be over in a couple seconds. It's okay and it's worth it.

Turn your head, don't look when the shot is given, and think about the kids who did not have a meningitis shot, and either had limbs amputated or died because of it.

Breathing. Anytime I have to get a shot, I take a deep breath in and let it out while they are giving me the shot. It takes my mind off the fact that there is a needle involved and I've stopped feeling anything since I started doing this.
