i have just moved from Glasgow to a village in ayrshire,,,,its absoluty wonderful.the first thing that struck me was that people were so friendly, even the young ones say hi to you when passing you,in turn this makes us more friendly, when we lived in glasgow,we lived in a housing scheme where people were very suspicious, hard attitude,,,,living here in the countryside life is more relaxed and its nice and you feel more like speaking to people....

Most city dwellers live in a state of worry about their neighbours & anyone else they might meet, because of so many people living so close together. In the country you not only have the space to breath, you also are not as crowded, & as there are considerably fewer people you have to rely of others a lot more than city folk do in the event of any problems. This has become part of the respective cultures over the years. There has been a little levelling out as more & more people have moved out of the cities into the country.

Too many people in the city...fear of others is higher in the cities and most people in cities DO seem to be in a hurry to get somewhere and are much more likely to keep private... I could NEVER live in a city... I enjoy the rather laid back lifestyle of the country... although it doesn't always go without it's own cases of drama now and then.

I just came back from a visit to my hometown (4000) in Germany. People know one another and everybody says hello. In the city it's different. Too many people for one and most of them strangers. It's more private there and business like. Too bad though, cause it's really nice to have someone acknowledge you out on the street.

Good question...that's why I live in the country.

I think people just get beaten down by big city life and the pace required to be a "success." I work in Oakland, San Francisco and Sacramento and people look at you like you're nuts if you say hello to them for no other reason than just to be friendly.

People in the country have time as opposed to the people in the city that are way too busy to even give you the time of day.

Generally there is less crime in rural areas and people are freeier and less worried. In large cities people tend to mind their own business and hope that you do the same because of the crime.
