i downloaded several ".avi" movies from bearshare, but they wont work. i've tried downloading codecs, vlc player, avs player, hyplay, and several others. help me out please, i really want to watch these movies.

Try to convert it to another format (e.g. mp4), you can use SUPER - it is free

You need a codec in order to view it, hard to say which one without seeing the file.
Try using AlShow...it's what I use. It works much better than Media Player and has most codecs you need already included.

might be a bum file.....anyone can rename something to .avi. It sounds like you have done everything correctly.....all you can do is keep trying codec's and different video players. Here are some you may have overlooked:
Divx
Realplayer
Quicktime
