Go for a nice soft merlot, or a bright zinfandel. You did not say how much you want to spend, but I would go for something around $15 -- there are good wines available in that price category.

For side dishes, I like a really good mashed potato, with cream and gruyere cheese. You won't need gravy. To brighten up the plate, and balance the meal, steam some broccoli or green beans, yellow squash and red pepper, just until bright (you can do this ahead of time if you wish). Then, just before serving, heat a little olive oil in a saute pan, and add some red pepper flakes (not too many!). When you can smell the red pepper, add the drained veggies and stir fry until crisp tender and still bright. This is one of my favorite sides.

If you want a healthier option for the potatoes, serve baked sweet potatoes with a spoon full of brown suger that you mixed a few drops of bourbon into. Adds an elegant easy touch.

Who needs dessert after that meal? If you think it necessary, buy champagne or port and the most expensive chocolate you can find. :) That will work.

One of my fav dinners! Try grilling some portobello mushrooms as a side dish. Get the big shrooms, brush them with olive oil, sprinkle with a little sea salt, then grill them, about 1 minute or 2 per side. Then take them off the grill and slice into strips. Try serving green beans, too. Buy some fresh, nip the ends, steam them till tender and bright green then sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve. Hot brownies with a scoop of vanilla icecream would be great for dessert. And for a wine, you can't go wrong with White Zin if she likes sweet. Have a great time!

Pasta or potatoes or risotto all go good with steak. Green veggies, salad or corn also go well. Fruity wine that is too sweet will not go well with steak. See if you can find a smooth light semidry red that is not bitter. Your local wine store/winery should be able to give you good advice and a tasting.

how about a baked sweet potato? or mashed potatoes (1 white and 1 sweet mashed together)? or regular mashed potatoes with some white horseradish mixed in?

steamed asparagus drizzled with a little olive oil and sliced garlic that was cooked in a sauce pan is my favorite side.

as far as wines go, red with meat. a nice Shiraz (not too dry) goes good with steak. if she doesn't want anything resembling dry, then maybe a Merlot.

A baked potato always goes good with steak and it's easy.. Get some bread... White Zinfandel is fruity-ish and not dry.... You could saute some mushrooms and onions with your steak too. Good Luck !!

Chardonnay is a nice wine that carries a fruit taste and is very pleasant with meals. I would serve baked sweet potato as a side and possibly sauteed mushrooms or stuffed mushrooms. Hope it goes well!

Don't go cheap on the bread, either. Get a good sourdough or italian bread.

Fresh veggies are always a plus and easy to steam in the microwave.
