There is a guy here who chats on IM all day. It is unfair to have to work for my paycheck, but this guy gets paid for doing nothing. Would it be better to talk directly to his boss, or send an anonymous note to his boss?

We do not have internet monitoring here (it is a small company, we can't afford that). And his boss doesn't pay any attention to him... he's been at it for months and would have been fired by now.

Don't say anything? Another guy I know (who works at a different company) says that he hasn't done any work in 8 years!

I quit my last job because of people like that. I'm not saying quit your job, but somehow advise him to stop, or inform his boss of his actions. Or if you dont care, like me, you just quit.

Don't say anything, I know it's hard for you to see this low life get away with not working and getting paid for it. His day to shine will come and sooner than you know. You should be mad at your boss for not picking up on it sooner rather than later.

I would concentrate on doing your job well. If you complain you will be seen as petty. you might be surprised how much the boss may be aware of. Employees like this usually get caught

send an anonymous printed note - don't email it, because it will be traced to you. type it in word, print it, don't save the document and put it in an envelope in put in punk's boss's mailbox or if you think that won't accomplish anything - put it in the boss's boss's mailbox

Crawl under his desk when he is not looking and pour superglue all over his computer cables and his power switches so he can't shut his computer off and log his computer onto some weird and freaky adult website and then glue his button so he can't scroll back.

Stop worrying about him. Do your job. Eventually he'll get caught. If he doesn't then, still don't worry about it. If you turn him in, you won't get any points from anyone.

It's up to his boss to find this out. If his boss doesn't, then it's not up to you to turn him in.

Be responsible for what YOU do, not others.
